I just put down the new issuse of this consumer mainstay and thier evalualtion of 5 popular roadsters. Of course, I take issue with the selection of the BOXSTER as #1 and the Vette as # 3 but what really caused me to do a double take was the praise of the Vette for it use of regular gas. Does anyone know of a production change as my June production car requires hi test. JET

It doesn't require it. The Vette will run on regular 89 octane. However, to get the best performance, premium is recommended.
I was also a bit surprised with the review, although I don't really consider CR to be that good in review of cars. I think they should have included Z51 in the trim lines given that it does impact performance. I think they would have answered some of their concerns. They included the Z06 which isn't even out yet. However, I agree with their comments on the steering feel and the silliness of having to put the car in reverse. Although to the latter, I think having the car not automatically unlock if you don't put it in reverse, is actually a good thing (that has saved me a few times).
On price the Vette competes with the Boxster, although we all know that on performance it's the 911.

Yep. she'll run on regular. just degrades the performance somewhat. That may your consumer mainstay magazine, but I think the damn thing is anti-american.
Consumer Reports is written for and by Granola eating rock climbers not car nuts like us. They are the last place I would expect to find a favorable review about any American car much less our Corvettes.
They fact that they were impressed with regular gas sort of says it all. NO WAY regular gas will go in my Vette...........

I gave up long ago on this Politically correct rag. In the past I read so many times that big engines waste gas and are not needed, along with a few other quotes. Just found then to be just too left leaning in their results.
Sadly, Consumer Reports is full of errors, such as this. Yes, Corvettes can run on regular, but the recommended fuel is 91 octane. CU was not saying that the Vette CAN run on regular--they were saying that regular is the recommended fuel. Clearly, they're wrong. (Many other cars are tuned for premium but can run on regular--CU correctly reports those cars as needing premium.)
A couple other errors in the magazine that I recall from way back when I used to read it:
The magazine surveys its subscribers for data used in their reliability ratings. They make much of their use of statistics to ensure data is reported and analyzed correctly. I was therefore impressed that they had markedly different reliability numbers for the GMC Jimmy versus the Chevy Blazer.
In another article, on telescopes, they stated that a good telescope should show a star as a clearly defined disk. Uh, no, that wasn't possible at the time, and is now only possible with very sophisticated techniques well beyond the realm of a ground-based single aperture lens system.
