I have read a few messages, drivers at 120-130mph. I've been there and the car guides as smooth as it does at 50. But I want the advertised speed of 186, and wouldn't want to do it on a public road. I wanted to take the Richard Petty Driving experiance(probably wouldn't be a bad thing to take a racing course before going 186 on a track), and then on the day you run on your own use my c6 instead. They won't allow this. Someone told me a few times a year Daytona has open track day, but haven't been able to get in touch with anyone at the speedway yet to find out. Has anyone done what I want to do yet, preferably in Florida? I saw a msg about a 2.5 mile road course track in Atlanta I believe. Is the straightaway long enough for 186?
I haven't done 186, but I have done 150 on the interstate (for a very short time, slowed down because I can't afford the ticket, I just had to see it on the HUD). I have also done the Richard Petty Driving Experiance in Homestead Florida, it definitly is worth doing - extreme adrenaline rush!!! It takes 3 or 4 hours for just 8 laps (oriantation, classroom, ride around in a passenger van, wait for your turn, etc.), but well worth it, I hope to do it again soon!
As far as taking your own car on the track, I would love to do it, but I'm not aware of any such Daytona programs. If there realy is such a thing, PLEASE let me know, I'm only an hour south of there.
Look for threads in this forum regarding Corvette Camp @ Moroso (in West Palm). While I doubt they have a straight-away long enough to get up to 186, it should be a ton of fun & very instructional.
I've gotten 178 on the Sawgrass Expressway. Felt well planted, but not anything I would really want to do on a public roadway regularly. One errant flick of the wheel and ...
Wonder if they would actually bother to even chase you at that speed?
Wonder how long my license would get suspended for, getting caught running that fast?
I've gotten enough tickets so far - with the headers and exhaust, the cops follow me as it is - KNOWING I'm gonna put my foot in it sooner or later. I'm driving so slow lately, it's a joke...
Even here in Germany there are few places that you can open her up. I've only had mine up to 150 mph. The truck traffic and the newer laws restricting speed on the autobahn around cities really cut back on the fun. Hockenheim is open to the public on certain days and I'll be planning to make the pilgrimage when my F1s are a little more worn down.

I have never heard of a open track day at any Nascar track. Even if you signed your life away I doubt Nascar would want to stand the liability.

Nope, the straightaways aren't that long at Moroso. I've driven a C6 Z06 there, and while I haven't checked the speedo at the end of the main straightaway (you definitely don't want to miss your brake point here), my guess is that even a pro won't get much more than 140.
Charlotte Motor Speedway has an "open track day". It is in the autumn I think. Call the museum tours there at the track for details. Sorry I don't ave the number but we visited this summer on the way to Hilton Head - neat experience.

I've HEARD (ahem) that the Greenway south of Orlando Int Airport is ripe late at night....

Road Atlanta. The fastest I ever got my supercharged 350Z on the long straight was 130, I think 150 would be about it in the vette. If you want to get your car on the track, check out www.chinmotorsports.com , especially in florida.
I've done 165 mph in my C6 on a newly open section of interstate. My car stayed just as calm as if I was driving 70 mph. However, I tried the same thing on a two lane black top road and was completely frightened. I was coming off the ground and then slamming back down. I had absolutely minimal control in those conditions.
Sorry guys, but driving that fast on a public road is plain stupid. Too many things can go wrong, and kill you and others. Get some track time with clubs or performance driving schools. Done on a track with adequate instruction is the only way to go. I've lived in Germany and driven 140 or so at moments on deserted stretches, but not often. Never again. More fun to get on the Nurburgring or Pocono, and concentrate on proper lines, braking points etc. If you've ever hit an animal at high speeds, you can relate.
Fair warning, if anyone blows past me at over 100 on public roads, I'm calling the cops.

Hell 100mph on I-95 is barely passing traffic. Trucks are doing 85mph.

I did I-4 to I-95 to Savannah on my way to Corvette Camp and at 90mph I was only keeping up with traffic
But he is right about taking a few HPDE's, just because the car can do 180mph+ it doesn't follow you can drive it safely. Just owning a Corvette doesn't confir any special skills. Besides once you go through a course or two, your need to go real fast changes to enjoying a well picked line, a good downshift, and nailing the apex all which can be at any speed.

Dan - you won't get going this fast on a road course - maybe 150 ... however, that is fun as hell anyway. Some car clubs RENT tracks and do a driving school along with it ... that is what I did to satisfy my need for speed. I would not try top ending on public roads unless they were closed and very smooth. 150 on a track is good enough for me.
I haven't seen this mentioned above and maybe it is just me but does your car seem to change above 85 ? I can' really explain it but it seems smoother and quieter and lower to the ground above 85.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
