Hello everyone, i am looking into buying a new 05 coupe and i keep reading about this skip shift "feature" which forces the driver to shift into 4th from first gear when accelerating slowly. How does the car actually force you to go into 4th, is it something mechanical? Can you physically put it into 2nd? I'm just very confused. Thanks in advance!

Owner's Manual, page 2-28, which you probably don't have yet.
One to Four Shift Light
(Manual Transmission)
When this light comes on,
you can only shift from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4)
instead of FIRST (1) to
SECOND (2).
You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn
off this feature. This helps you get the best possible
fuel economy.
After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a
lower gear if you prefer.
Notice: Forcing the shift lever into any gear except
FOURTH (4) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes
on may damage the transmission. Shift only from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on.
This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
• you are 21 percent throttle or less.
Note: You can shift to third instead of fourth, although the book doesn't mention that.
Get a "Skip Shift Eliminator". Anybody that deals with Corvette has them. 20-30 bucks, installs under the car on the side of the tranny. Once in place, you still get the skip shift light, but the 2nd gear lockout is gone.
A solenoid keeps you from putting the car into 2nd when certain criterria are met; engine temp. rpm, etc. The CAGS bypass doesn't let the solenoid interfere...

Thank you all for the replies i appreciate it. I searched the forum for about 30 mins before i posted and found out all about what it does, but i couldnt figure out HOW. Thank you for clearing that up for me firedog, i wasnt sure if it was something mechanical or software only. Now i know there is something that physically stops you and forces you into 4th.
If you're loafing in traffic and aren't going particularly fast, having this feature will help you save some gas. Bypassing it means you have to remember every time. Others who bypass it like to go from 1st to 3rd to 5th, which the engine is certainly capable of doing. But it's also just as easy to go from 1st to 4th.
It took a few days to get used to it, and I won't take it off now. It's there when I forget. (I don't think the other guys gave it a chance...)
If you go ***** to the wall or super slow, it turns itself off so you have access to all the gears. It also won't work on a cold engine.
Gregg.

I would drive with it before you bypass it. It hardly ever comes on for me and personally I kind of like the 1 to 4 shift, but when I am more than a quarter down on the throttle and or not in the target mph it doesnt even come on anyway
