Check your owners manual. It says it is normal. It will give you a percent of times that is normal. Mine does it once in awhile when first started. I am sure a new shifter will not correct the problem.

Default Shifting from a Stop

Your dilemma has been reported by many and is common in all standartd transmissions. It has nothing to do with the shifter. It’s the gear teeth not lining up properly.

Simple fixs:
1. Just cycle the clutch.
2. As you’re coming to a stop, put it in 1st gear.

I have the B&M on mine and like it so much better than the stock shifter, however, it will not do anything on the 1st gear problem...

its common in all transmissions... cycle the clutch - you can avoid the "looking like an ****" by putting it in 1st when the cross traffic light turns yellow

All manual transmissions have this problem from time to time. It is a gear alignment problem that can be fixed if you put it into first just as you roll to a stop at the light. It will become a habit and you will never lok like a dork again! Bill

The problem is the large gears (high mass) required to manage all the torque. The gears are hard to speed up or slow down to mesh properly. If you put the car in first while it is still moving slowly, it is much easier, because the gears are rotating and the synchros have less work to do.

I find that this isn't a problem if I drop the clutch and put it into first pretty much in one motion, as if I were shifting gears. It's only a problem if I dwaddle around by pushing the clutch in, pausing, then putting it into first. I think that by doing it quickly the gears are still spinning, and they sync up. Trying to put it into gear with both sides at a dead stop may block as the shoulders of the teeth run into each other.

I have almost 4,000 miles on mine and It still happens. I don't remember it happening on my 01 C5 6spd as often as it does on my C6.

Default If you put into first prior to stopping

then you will be stuck with your foot on the clutch for the entire duration of the light which can get tiresome if the clutch has a stiff spring. Is that what you mean or are you saying that stopping in first aligns the synchros so it shifts into first easier when you start?

In order to make it easy to shift into first, you have to leave it there for the duration of the stop. Quite frankly, the clutch is so light on the C6, that I can't imagine why it would be an issue. Even for this old guy, I have no problem. Now if this were like the mid-60s muscle cars, I'd understand not wanting to hold the clutch in.

Old habits die hard... I never spend any more time holding the clutch in than I have to in order to prolong the life of the throwout bearing. Even though the bearing is cheap (or it was in the old days) it's just such a b1tch to replace.

I think if you put it into gear before a complete stop you can pull it into neutral while waiting for the light as the syncros are then already lined up. (That might have been a run on sentence.)

Shifting to first and then neutral at a stop sounds like it makes more sense. I also have a 70 big block with a REAL stiff clutch. Sitting at a light with my foot on that one sucks. I've got one big leg (left) from driving that beast.

I believe there is a TSB or some kind of service bulletin out for this common problem. If you have problems shifting into first gear more than 20% of the trys (I believe this is correct), GM will repair the transmission. Whether or not the annoyance is worth letting Mr. Goodwrench tear your new trans apart is a personal decision.

Same problem. My 2005 is having the trans repaired and should be finished sometime this week. There IS a problem with first gear and GM WILL repair it.

Do you or anybody else here have the TSB for this issue?

Thanks.
