Default Half quart overfill

Received a letter from GM offering a free LOF for my car. Made the appointment and had it done. No problem. Always treated well at the dealership. Put 100 miles on it and then noticed the paper said 6 qts of oil added. Checked mine and sure enought 1/2 qt over. Called them and they took care of it immediately. My question is can 1/2 qt over cause a problem? Only problems so far: Left fuel sending unit, blown fuse in the evaporative system (caused a fuel warning light). Love the car!

You have nothing to worry about. An overfill of 1/2 quart is pretty minor and besides you said they took care of it which I assume means they removed 1/2 quart.

I find it pretty sad that a Chevy service dept. does not know how much oil to put in the car. It was 5.5 quarts too with the C5 if I remember correctly. Based on that alone I can't see why they would put in 6 qts. I'm glad to hear that they squared it away for you though.

My 06 owner's manual says 6 quarts for Z51 cars.

The manual specifically says to add an extra quart over normal if you're gunna race!

My first oil change at a Bentley Chevy in Florence, AL was 1 quart over. (6-1/2 quarts). I took a weekend trip right after the change and put almost 1000 miles on it. Then took it back when I got back to town and they drained it out. No problems.
The owner's manual says an overfill can damage your engine, but it also says to use 1 extra quart for Autocrossing. ?
I wouldn't worry. I've had no problems.
The funny part was the service manager said the dipstick wasn't very accurate. Who's the dipstick? I made them write a ticket when they drained the extra quart, just for records. By the way, I've been driving 100 miles to a much better dealer with much better service. Larry Clark Chevy in Aberdeen, MS. Worth the drive for me. Glad you're loving the car. With about 10.5k miles, I'm still loving every minute of it.

Notice: If you use your vehicle for racing or other
competitive driving, the engine may use more
oil than it would with normal use. Low oil levels can
damage the engine. Be sure to check the oil level
often during racing or other competitive driving and
keep the level at or near 1 quart (1 L) above the
upper mark that shows the proper operating range
on the engine oil dipstick. For information on
how to add oil, see Engine Oil on page 5-14. After
the competitive driving, remove excess oil so
that the level on the dipstick is not above the upper
mark that shows the proper operating range.

Are you kidding, 100 miles for an oil change? You can do a better job yourself. $30 and you know it is done right and it takes less than 20 minutes.

There must be some car-to-car variation somewhere. Just did my first oil and filter change last weekend. Added the prescribed 5-1/2 quarts, did the warm up then wait routine and then checked the level. Had to add the other half quart to get it up to the full mark. So, I wouldn't go too hard on the dealer if they put in 6.

Z51? Z51 takes 6.0 quarts. Non-Z51 takes 5.5 quarts; Z06 takes 8.0 quarts. No C6s take 6.5 quarts.

The best thing to do is put in the specified amount of oil, start it up, then let it drain down a half hour or so and check the level on the dipstick. If the dipstick is INCORRECT, I would take it back to the dealer for replacement. If the car is out of warranty, I would just mark the full level with a file and use that instead of the factory marks.

Is this for non-Z51 cars too or it doesn't matter?

There is a lot of discussion (argument) about this.

The manual does say 5.5 qts for standard cars, 6.0 qts for Z51 (because of the oil cooler). The question is, how much of that extra 1/2 qt in the Z51 cars will actually drain out during the oil change?
Different folks give different answers.

If you have a Z51, when you change your oil, see how many quarts it takes to fill it up . When I drained mine, it took precisely six quarts to fill it back to the full line. I can't account for what others have experienced...incorrect dipstick, bad draining technique, who knows.

One question I wish Gene (Fred Beans) or Bob (Fitchner Chevrolet) would answer for us...Does the LS2 dipstick have the same part number for Z51 and non-Z51?
