I think you can just turn the off of Auto and they won't come on. I myself really like auto, however, I never have to think about when to use the lights.
AUTO (Automatic): Turning the band to this position
sets the exterior lamps in automatic mode. AUTO mode
will turn the exterior lamps on and off depending on
how much light is available outside the vehicle.

To override AUTO mode, turn the control to off.
The manual doesn't say it, but the control will not stay in the off position...it is spring-loaded, and returns to the AUTO position. The next time you start the car, the lights will come on as before if it is dark enough.
One way to keep the headlights off is to set the control to the parking light position; they are going to be on anyway as DRL, and will time out after you turn off the ignition. One negative for this approach is the DIC says "Headlights Recommended" until you reset the DIC. I personally don't consider this a satisfactory solution...I leave the lights in AUTO position and let them do their thing.
Edit: With the parking lights on, the "Headlights Recommended" message may reset a minute or so after you back out of the garage and the sensor sees daylight...I haven't taken the experiment that far.
I really like the auto feature, but there have been a few times when I felt like it was dark enough that I wanted the headlights on even though they would not come on using auto. No problem, switched to "on" and everything was fine.
