Pull e-brake
Leave tranmission in first
Press the stop engine button

When I open the door the beeper sounds about five times.
I then get out of the car and close the door. The horn sounds three times. This is a pretty good signal that you failed to shut down the car properly.
NO. YOU EXPERIENCE DBS WHEN EVERYTHING IS DONE CORRECTLY ACCORDING TO THE OWNER'S MANUAL. IT USUALLY HAPPENS AFTER 24-48 HOURS OF BEING TURNED OFF. WHEN YOU RETURN TO DRIVE YOUR CAR THE BATTERY IS DEAD, DRAINED, AND THE CAR IS USELESS UNTIL YOU EITHER GET A JUMP START OR CHARGE THE BATTERY. GOOD LUCK!

No. Most of us that have experienced DBS have shut the car down properly and some unknown event causes the car to come alive somewhere and run the battery down. If you're being serious, it would be kind of hard to ignore what you described.

But, with enough distraction it can happen.
It happened to me once about a year ago while trying to match my visor garage door buttons to a new rolling code opener. It was in a noisy and busy environment, and I was jumping in and out the car and up the ladder pushing buttons. I must have blanked out the warnings. 4 hours or so later I came back to find the car in neutral and not properly shutdown. Luckily it still started.
Like they say, sh*t happens.
I have had 2 DBS events. First was when I didn't have it in Reverse, but had it in 5th. The second seemed to happen when I got out of the car before my wife did. She had her FOB with her. I'm wondering whether the system became confused and didn't go to sleep as it normally does. Since then I make sure that I get out last and haven't had another DBS event.
Also, I try to back into parking spaces and then set the E-brake before I turn it off. This has worked for me, so far.

Wrong, first time was operator doing wrong. DBS only counts when EVERTHING is done right and you still get a dead battery
It was just written in another thread that turning the car OFF AND THEN GOING TO REVERSE IS WRONG...IT WILL NOT SHUT DOWN PROPERLY.
That's been bashed about before and I'm not sure what the conclusion was. I was taught to go reverse, then shut down. But actually, shut down then reverse is slightly safer, since the motor is already off, you can't lurch by mistake.
You'd think if the other way was wrong, there would be more of a warning with gongs/honks and a different DIC message.
I don't recall hearing about anyone getting DBS this way, and I'm sure that I've done it more than a few times when I hit 5th by mistake on shut down.

A September GM advisory was read to me on the phone by a service tech. It specifically says to have the car in reverse before turning the ignition off. They may just be grasping at straws with that, but it did say that.

That's also what the 2005 owner's manual says. Why do some people think it's okay to just ignore everything in the manual? Yes, mistakes in the manual have been found, but not many. Check page 2-31 (reproduced below).
Parking Your Vehicle
(Manual Transmission)
Before you get out of your vehicle, move the shift lever
into REVERSE (R) and firmly apply the parking
brake. Once the shift lever has been placed into
REVERSE (R) with the clutch pedal pressed in, you
can turn the ignition off and release the clutch. If
you attempt to exit the vehicle without being in
REVERSE (R), the Driver Information Center (DIC) will
display SHIFT TO REVERSE and a chime will sound.
Notice: If you do not put a manual transmission in
REVERSE (R) before exiting your vehicle, the
battery will drain and could be damaged. Always put
a manual transmission in REVERSE (R) before
shutting off the engine and exiting the vehicle.
Sorry for a double post but I just noticed this thread...I got a DBS once when I put the car into reverse after the engine was off. I forgot to put it into reverse and got the message, then put it into reverse, message went away, column locked but DBS the next time I went to use the car.
I had read the manual and thought I understood it to mean shifting to reverse with the motor off was OK. If they really meant for you to restart the motor they should have stated it more clearly. Same for the DIC message. That particular mistake won't happen again.
