Default WHAT is MP3??

After 3500 miles ..

I think I read that my 06 will play “MP3’s.” WONDERFUL!! But, what the heck is an MP3? Does it LOOK like a regular CD? Is it BETTER than a regular CD? Will it increase my gas mileage?

As you might guess, I’m not a music nut. (Just talk.) Although I love blue grass .. which, of course, everyone loves.

Yes, I'm sure it’s all in the manual .. someplace .. probably under “MP3’s for Dummies.” When (if) I master the MP3’s (what they are and how to install them) I’m going to try to figure out the MAPPING system. (Hopefully before the 07's come out.)

BUT, if I never figure any of it out, that radio/map display really looks nice.

MP3 is a file format for music files - compressed music files. You can create a cd with mp3 files and it will play in your car. I have already done a few mp3 CDs. The software on your PC should be able to walk you through on how to create an mp3 CD. If you have another questions please let me know.

Jim - MP3, WMA, and a few others are methods of compressing music files so that you can fit well over 1 hundred on a regular CD disk instead of 12 or so. The music is encoded from a regular audio file and then "expanded" by the player or head unit.

The big controversy is that GM promised that the head unit would decode MP3 files but due to some screw up Denso could not get the firmware (computer instructions saved on a special computer chip in the head unit) to work correctly before the C6 was released. A year later those of us with Nav 1SBs can only play one regular CD - no changer no 100 songs avaliable at a time.

There is still no changer available and we all expected that the MP3 capability would allow us the ability to not change disks all of the time (no place to keep them either). Many of us are waiting for the new firmware that will update our units so that we will have what we were promised. BTW - the update will be done through a disk inserted into the DVD Nav slot (last I heard).

Hope this explains all of the issues!

Default MP3's

You have to burn your own. I get about 125 to 150 songs per disc. The process is easy using your computer and songs you download either from one of the downloading sources (e.g., using KazaaLiteRenaissance, Grockster,BearShare and so forth). Also, you can take your regular CD's, enter them into your computer harddrive and then transform them to MP3's to burn to disc. Either way, you get lots of tunes. With 6 discs that gives you around 700 to 900 songs. That should be enough for a cruise. Once you get used to it, its a breeze. Good luck. Happy drivin'! (2005-DSOM-C6-Coupe)

Just set your XM Radio to Bluegrass and you won't need the MP3.

I wish that was true. But basically you can put about 10 times the number of songs of a regular cd. Also the manual mentions that it takes CD-Rs, but I created one from CD-RW and it works well.
