GM does not reccommend Mobil 1 oil directly in the owners manual. They say "Your Corvette engine is filled at the factory with a Mobil 1 synthetic oil, which meets all requirements for your vehicle." They also say "As shown in the viscosity chart, SAE 5W-30 is best for your vehicle. However, you can use SAE 10W-30 if it's going to be 0*F (-18*C) or above." They go on to say that "Oils meeting these requirements should also have the "Starburst" symbol on the container. This symbol indicates that the oil has been certified by the American Petrolem Institute (API). Do not use any oil that does not carry this Starburst symbol. You should look for this on the oil container and use only those oils that are identified as meeting GM Standard 4718M and have the Starburst symbol on the front of the oil container."
If you were to have problems with your engine and GM said it was oil related, and you followed what they said in your owners manual about what oil to use, you would have no problems with the warrenty. No where in my owners manual does GM recommend a brand of oil, and neither does my owners manual refer me to the "GM Techline" to determine what brand of oil to use.
Go with your owners manual, it's what counts.
I hear Royal Purple is a good lube. Anyone use that product?
Back of the 5W30 Royal Purple bottle says it meets GM 4718M. A handful of other synthetics also meet it including Pennzoil Platinum and Castrol Syntec.
Mobil 1 appears to be great stuff. It is going to be this "Pennzoil" man's choice for his C6. I don't know anyone who has had a problem running this factory recommended product.

federal law says if they recommend a specific brand and you can not find it GM must supply it free to you.

The C6 owner's manual does not mention 10W30 being suitable in any temperature range.
There may be a difference between the LS1 and the new LS2.

According to my "Factory Approved Service Products" booklet that's included with the owners manual, they say "Mercedes-benz USA recommends the use of Mercedes-Benz original parts, replacement parts, accessories as well as factory approved service products explicitly approved by us for your vehicle model." Under the heading "Approved engine Oils" they say " Mercedes-Benz recommends the use of MB approved engine oils listed in the Mercedes-Benz oil specification sheet 229.1 or 229.3 which also meet ACEA and/or API classifications listed on the chart below."
I guess that about covers all the "approved" and "recommended" hogwash.
