Use the GM accessory hatch mallet.
Seriously, use the built in pull down handle and close it with some force. I've aslo noted that it does start to close easier with time as the rubber starts to compress a bit.

Afer hearing all of you say how it takes a certain amount of force using the handle, I went to the garage for some practice runs. I was able to do it 3 times in a row. I think I have it now
