I have a 2005 that is 3 months old, and has 1500 miles on it. About half the time that I get in my car and start it up in the morning, it ticks like several of the lifters are collapsed, then they pump up and the noise goes away.
I don't remember either one of my c5's ever doing it, also the valve train seems noisier than the c5.
What do you think, trip to the dealer, or ignore it, they all do it?
I hate the thought of going for warranty work on my new motor, and I can imagine them trying to trouble shoot this kind of intermittant problem.
I just hit 1,500 miles with my '06 Z-51 and no lifter tick on it. I am in Atlanta so the ambient temp has still been pretty warm (55-60 degrees in my garage in the morning).
I would take it to the dealer. My wife's 05 GMC Denali with the iron block 6 liter has no lifter tick in it even of left outside and it now has 10k miles on it.
My C5 has a similar noise, but I'm pretty sure it isn't lifters because it starts 5-10 seconds after the engine is running. Goes away after a couple of minutes. Been doing it for 68,000 miles, no problems.
Some folks say the injectors can mimic the noise of a bad lifter.
Mine has done it a few times, exactly as you describe. It's not half the time, but maybe once every 10 starts. When it happens, it lasts for no more than 2 or 3 seconds. I haven't been too worried about it. If you learn anything from the dealer, please let us know, though. Thanks.

Mine certainly does and it is the injectors. But it makes that sound all the time. I just pretend its lifters as it reminds me of the old days of solid lifter cams
wewing, I think I remember a discussion on your noise before. Might want to do a search. I think (can't remember for sure) that it is momentary piston slap. I get it very occasionaly with my Silverado upon start up. Better to safe than sorry though.

My 05 C6 does not do this. However my 02 Yukon XL does exactly that (drives me nuts). I took it to the Dealer and said it was normal.

Mine does it every blue moon, I just shut it off and turn it on again and it goes away.

A slight tick on all cylinders is normal, but a loud tick on one or two that goes away after a few seconds isn't. That's a collapsed lifter, and it shouldn't do that. Usually, you only hear this in an old engine with lots of wear. With a new engine, it is either a manufacturing error, or there's a piece of grit blocking an oil passage. Neither is a good thing.
My 4 Runner has done this since entering the first winter. I think it might be piston slap, 130,000 miles later still does it. Usually only on cold mornings last about the time it takes to back out of the garage and start heading down the street. I was told no worries by the dealer. I don't know about that. I still use no measurable oil. Use synethic and change 12,000 miles with filter change at 6,000 miles. By the way this care has been problem free. I know not to do with C6 just thought that it might be more common occurance across the board.

I hear a slight ticking in my engine at low speed and light throttle. Under normal driving conditions (acceleration, cruising) I don't hear a thing. If you don't hear the ticking or tapping noise increasing and decreasing with rpm's it is most likely not a valve but injector noise. A valve tap is pronounced and doesn't generally go away unless engine rpm is so high it becomes indistinguishable.
A piston in a cylinder bore has two motions. One is the desired up and down motion, the other is a rocking couple. The latter creates a noise called piston slap. Skirt design, ring placement, and pin offset all affect the rocking couple, and the amount of noise. They also affect the amount of friction, the degree of bore sealing, etc. All factors don't optimize at the same point. So there's a trade-off involved between good engine performance and minimum noise. Some engines have that trade-off toward minimum noise, others have it toward maximum power and efficiency. Guess which one the LS2 design favors.
