Something unusual happened to me today. I was shutting down the car when I noticed that the yellow LED on the start switch was on solid and the red one was blinking. The shifter looked like it was in reverse, and there were no messages on the DIC - just this light blinking ominously. My feeling was that, even though the shifter was not in reverse, the vehicle was not shut down properly. So I shifted to neutral and back to reverse again - no change. Then I hit the bottom side of the switch; this time, I heard the short whirring sound (sounds like a stepper motor or something) that you hear between the time that you press the start button and the time the starter engages. After that the car seemed to shut down normally.
I have never experienced DBS <knock wood> but I suspect that, if I had left the vehicle in this condition for a few days, I would have been initiated into the club.
Anyway, just thought I would mention this in case it helps anyone (e.g. the GM engineers who read this forum )
P.S. What is that little whirring sound coming from behind the dashboard? Is that the column lock engaging/disengaging, perhaps?
