My last performance car was a Subaru STI and it had a cool feature where you could set a shift light/chime at any rpm you chose. It really worked nice, especially the chime because you noticed it even while you had your eyes glued to the road. I had mine set about 500 rpm below red line to account for the time delay between hearing the chime and actually executing the gear change. I think GM could do this with no additional parts merely by making it part of the software for the DIC.
Cool idea. I hope you know that there's a 'shift up' arrow on the HUD at redline?
Best thing I've seen is a strobe light that you set to flash at the desired RPM. I think visual shifting aids are better than sound.
I don't have the HUD. The STI had both a chime and a light and for me the chime worked better. It would also be easier to add that way because all the parts are already in the car. Just add a new option in the DIC personalizations and use existing ECU and chimes to monitor the rpm make a sound. The adjustability feature is nice during break-in also because you can set a low value for the first 1,000 miles then change it whenever you want. GM probably feels like they have it covered with the HUD gizmo.
I don't think I would like the chime. Here's why... I like to shift my mn6 based on the "feel". I don't want a light, arrow or especially a chime telling me when I should shift. Being able to change that setting wouldn't work for me either because the "winding road" can effect the rpm and therefore the shifting required. Like when traveling uphill or down... around a long curve... or stuck in traffic. That's my .02. To each their own.

The shift up aids are mostly used just for straight line drag racing.

I kinda agree. Doesn't this car (and for that matter most new cars) have enough "automatic" built in features. There is something to be said for actually being responsible for your own performance driving.
