I grew up in Bkln and LI...in the 60s, if you raced you paid big-time. Don't know about now. In any event, speed on a public road is dangerous (and no, I'm not a shrinking violet) both because other drivers may appear unexpectedly and because you've got no safety facilities on the highway if you need them. I didn't mean to flame...I think Bondurant's is terrific and running at speed on a controlled and safe facility is great fun.

Enjoy your C6 safely and,

Harry

In the 60's there was a Wetsons drive through on Hempstead Turnpyke that everyone gathered at to run for registrations. Cars from National Speedway would run on the streets cars like Little Red Wagon and Hemi under glass. I do not even remember seeing a cop back then. There definetly were not as many in those days and what racing that was done on the streets was far more frequent then there is now. It was a time of open headers and 500 plus horse power cars. They used to have a 1/8 mile drag strip at Islip speedway back then as well. After people got tired of the street they would go there to shot for some times. If I remember correctly it cost about 6 bucks to run. Good old days.

I remember the Wetsons (I lived in West Hempstead). While there was a lot of racing then, you sometimes got nailed. I had a friend with a '66 GTO that just had to show it off...got a ticket for 105 in a 50...muy mucho dinero and license supension but he got it on the Wantagh Pkwy. My humble '66 LeMans (the original Green Latrine) with it's SOHC 6 engine could barely exceed the speed limit if I tried.

I also remember the Islip Speedway...I had another friend with a Dodge Hemi that he souped up who would run there along with another pal who had a truly worked over '58 Pontiac something. Good old days indeed! Be well
