Default Nav help needed

I've been playing with the Nav system and came across a problem I cant find an answer to. When I set my home address the Nav locates my house just fine and shows it on the street exactly where it should be but when my car is parked at my house the Nav shows my car quite some distance away in a field. I tried to recalibrate it by following the instructions in the book. When I move the car to the house and reposition it everything seems to be fine, but when I hit OK it just puts the car back in the field. Anyone know if there is anything I can do? It does the same thing when I drive home from somewhere, it doesn’t put me on the streets in my neighborhood. I looked for a troubleshooting section in the guide but there isn't one. I've also been trying to find a tech support number for it but can't locate one. Any suggestions???

If this happens with every address, I'd say problem. If just home address, I say a problem with the data or with the logic in determining the lat lon of your home matching the GPS reading. Try the version 2 or if you have version 2 try version 1 data discs. It would be interesting to hear how it turns out.

Another option...I don't have my car with me, but I remember seeing a calibration button on one of the screens, but I have not used it.

Good Luck

Jim

Is the street you live on relatively new, i.e. 2 years or so? I have noticed that some areas I drive in, it shows like I am off course, and it's just not up to date even though you would think it should be. I have noticed this in different type car nav systems.

Geocoding of the map base in your neighborhood is off. Nothing you can do except report it to GM and the map data supplier and hope it gets corrected in the next map data CD release.

The GPS calculates a latitude/longitude from the satellites and gives it to the NAV system. The NAv system then retrieves the map data from the CD for that lat/long. If the CD data is incorrect then its hows you on the wrong roads or in a field.

The address lookup knows where your house is located on the street and gets the lat/long fromt he CD map base. It looks right on the map. But the lat/long coming from the CD does not agree with where your house is really located.

It's a problem with the map data source vendor.

I thought there was a way to select present position as a way point? If that's the case just park in your driveway and make a position.

Personally, I use a gas station a few blocks away for my "home" location. I also use a UPS store for my mail box and car registrations. If anyone steals my car, they will never know where I live. Sounds like over kill, but we live in a strange world these days.
