I posted a similar message in the c5 area and are curious to the take the c6 people have.
Having a hard time deciding on buying a much less expensive c5 vert and taking my time to build a fully modded 447ci or just go with a C6.
I could take my time to build a big bore stroker without breaking the bank on the initial purchase and drive it while I save for upgrades or just pony up for the c6 with 400hp out of the crate.
The interior is greatly improved on the c6, however the body has not grown on me.
Depends on how much money that you have. If you save money by getting the C5 and then build a motor, you will basically have no warranty on the motor (or at the very least, not a very long warranty) plus none, or very little warrantly left on the car itself.
In buying my C6 new, I have the manuf warranty for 3/36 and plan on getting the 6/100 extra coverage. I dont know about you, but I dont need the hassle of fixing something that breaks on this Vette while Im still paying it off as I am not at the point in my life where I can buy the car outright.
I think I would have to go for the C6. Dollar for dollar down the line you would be ahead. JMHO you do what feels right for you. Only you can make the decision.
I'll bet the C6 is going to be built before you take it.
C6 prices vary considerably, for both the 05 and the 06. If you can find a C6 for a good price, you'd be better off taking it. At least one extra year, maybe two, on the free warranty.
My 2003 z06 is on eBay this week below wholesale, so I expect it to sell. The next thing I start to think about is the cost of a lightly modded c6 vert is not that far from a - hate to say it - gen 3 viper with next to no miles on it.
Listen to your heart and choose the one that floats your boat the best.
But only after you have done an honest self evaluation of your long term desire and willingness to follow through with the C5 plan.
Ane bit of advice. If you get a C5 and you want a car in pristine condition, buy one that's already in pristine condition. It almost always costs a lot more to restore an abused looking car than it does to buy one that's in pristine condition in the first place.

If you're up for the challange of a serious project, and you like the body style of the C5 better, then go for it! You can probably get a nice C5 for 20 grand these days. You can do a lot with the extra cash.

Before you get the used vert, make sure you ask the forum to see if anyone knows it. There have been some with problems.
I had a nice 98 Vert 6spd. Was planning to do a large budget job on the car. Major power upgrade (Supercharger H&C+more) and some dress up items.
Wife got a little upset over that, said just a big waste of money and then you end up with a Modified car that would be hard to sell.
She said take the money you put aside sell the C5 and go get a new C6.
Well a new car is not a bad thing + keeps the peace in the family.
All in all its nice when you SO says Dear why don't you go out and by a new Vette.
No matter how much money you throw at a c5...it'll never be a c6!!!and you'll never get your mod money back out of it either!C6 is way superior,so why not start your mods w/a superior vehicle in the first place??
There's a lot to be said for doing a nice project like you are talking about on the C5. I love the feeling of having a unique car and you'd certainly have that. That said, the C6 is an awesome car and does have quite a few improvements over the C5 (I've owned both). It almost comes down to 6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other. If you tend to always have to have the latest and greatest, the C6 might be your thing. If you like to take something and "make it your own", the C5 project might do more for you. Your car, your choice. Best of luck either way!
I was in the EXACT same boat as you, I love the C5 and the thought of a low 11 second/high 10 second one really gets me excited...but so does the thought of a BRAND NEW Corvette that I also happen to love the styling and ride of.
In the end I went with the new C6 over the used C5 but I could still see myself buying/building a nice C5 someday in the future as well.
