Default Trunk Latch Pulldown Broken?

Yesterday I put some stuff in the back and closed the trunk in the same manner that I've been doing since I got the car. I just drop the lid with a little tug and 9 times out of 10 (with doors and windows closed) the pull-down feature engages and finishes securing the trunk. Well this time I heard the pull down motor engage, but it sounded like it was dieing and sure enough the lid did not close completely. I tried it again and the same thing happened. I tried it another way by just bringing the lid to rest on the latch, then pushing down and again the pull down only worked part way. I then opened one of the doors and tried it and the lid seemed to latch securely. So far no problems opening the trunk. I'll have the dealer check it, but just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem. I've had my car for 14K/13 months now.

... put some stuff in the back ...

The lid fits very closely, and it could be that something was in the way. Especially notice the two areas on either side, near the tail lights - the inner part of the lid is only a fraction of an inch away from these if not actually touching. I've had a case where the shoulder pad on the strap on my laptop case (only about 3/8" thick) got in there and interfered with closing the hatch.

Good point.
I will add that with my windows shut, I cannot drop the hatch and expect it to latch. It just will not shut, period. If the windows are open slightly, then I can drop it and it closes nicely. What I normally do though (especially now in the cold when the windows are usually closed tight) is just bring the hatch down all the way slowly until it touches the latch, and then just push down firmly... the latch then sucks it right down nice. Quick and easy.

I had a simular experience, but it was with a small cooler. the handle of the cooler touched the rear hatch lid and lifted it at the one corner.
