Default Dealer Allocation

I'm new to the forum. And I've been looking at threads for buying a new corvette and the word "ALLOCATION" comes up often. How does "allocation" affect the dealership?

Default allocation...

dealers get a certain # of vettes to sell every year.Based on how many vettes they sell!!Kerbeck, for instance, sells a ton of vettes so they'll get the most as opposed to the mom and pop joint down the street that sells 2 a year!

Let me see if I can put the word allocation in perspective.

In May, 2004, I put down a deposit on a 2005 C6 coupe with my local dealer who sells about 3-6 Corvettes a year. 5 months later, GM still hadn't picked up my order because the local dealer hadn't yet gotten his first allocation.

But the dealer never told me anything about "allocation." I had to find out about that here. I canceled my order and bought one that was on another dealer's lot.

Is there some way to find out what their allocation is, short of believing a dealer.

If you call or e-mail a forum dealer they will let you know their allocation. I bought mine from Monica at Maxie Price in Georgia and I live in California. It was easier than buying local and I saved thousand's of dollars.

I don't think so. You might get an idea by asking local folks how many vettes they think that dealer sold last year.

Every dealer has their allocation for a given period. They can even print it out, by week, if you want to look at it. The other bit of information you need to know, though, is how many sold orders they already have in their system. A small dealer with one allocation and no sold orders could place quicker than a larger dealer with a lot of orders already in the system.

Don't forget, individual options are also constrained- so an allocation doesn't necessarily mean a Z51 or polished wheels will get picked up.

Default buying from Forum sponsoring dealers

You should check out MacMulkin (N.H.), Kerbeck (N.J.) and Maxie Price (GA) as they are larger allocation dealers and can order and get you a car pretty quick. I placed my order last week (Tuesday) with Tommy Jr. at MacMulkin and the order was placed and picked up with an order # and TPW (target production week) of 2/13 - 2/19. I got word from Tommy on Saturday and am now planning for a trip to BG to take delivery at the National Corvette Museum around 3/1 or so.

Bottom line, its a lot easier to order through one of the forum dealers. You will be hard pressed to beat their prices and you will almost certainly get your vette faster then with a local dealer, unless he already has one sitting on the lot.

You get a lot of good info here about the various forum vendors. There's not very many car dealers you keep hearing good things about, but this forum has them

I'll give my local dealers a chance to come close to the forum dealers prices but I know they won't.

I like the idea of car dealers that treat their customers so well that they can do business in an environment where potential customers can get dozens of past customers experiances with the dealers by doing a forum search.

After a few weeks here I know lot more about the forum venders integrety and customer service than I ever will about my local dealers.

What happens after you get notified from the dealer that the order was placed? I got a letter from my dealer that my order was placed with GM on 17 JAN 06, so now do they wait for GM to accept the order and respond with a TPW. All the letter says is that the order was placed and I will be contacted just before the vehicle arrives.

They want you to believe that these cars are "special" and hard to get. I had no problem getting what I wanted from each dealer I went to.

Z06's maybe in short supply now, but wait a year and they will be discounting them as well. GM always builds one more than they can sell.

There is a Status Event Code associated with your order as it moves through the system. Your dealer should know each week what that code is. Here's a guide to the codes.

STATUS EVENT CODES
1100-Order placed at dealer
1101-Order accepted by GM
2001-Order generated to dealer
2005-Order replaced with GM Prospec order
2050-Order changed
2500-Order sent to production, preferenced
3000-Order accepted by production control
3100-Order available to sequence (now the tpw becomes more stable)
3300-Order selected for production by assembly plant
3400-Order broadcasted for production
3800-Vehicle produced
4150-Vehicled invoiced to dealer
4200-Vehicle shipped
5000-Vehicle delivered to dealer
6000-Vehicle delivered to customer

Your dealer should know what your order's Status Event Code is whenever you ask him.

I found this forum after I ordered my car from a small dealer that assured me they had an allocation. Needless to say I've been waiting over 4 months for my car now. My next vette will definately come from one of the forum dealers.

Thanks, Silver I'm going to inquire about what code my order is currently in tomorrow. This wait is worse than Christmas ever was as a child. I'm already fighting the urge to order the 6CD changer, splash guards and a bunch of other stuff

Sometimes a local dealer can work out OK, I ordered mine in early December, the local dealer (where i had bought 3 cars over the years, they sell about 50 Corvettes per year) promised they would be able to get my Z51 order produced by Spring. They also beat Kerbeck's price by a few bucks(!!!) and offered a reasonable trade-in value for my C5 with the option that I could try to sell it myself while waiting. That trade was important, I didn't want to be forced selling a Corvette in the middle of a Chicago winter.

It all worked out- my NCM delivery is set for Feb 27. Was I smart, or just dumb lucky? We'll never know for sure...

But if you have doubts, call Dave Salvatore at Kerbecks. Very straightforward guy.
