Default Paint code problems:

Just went to see paint mixer with my VR paint code [from the glove box decal] he say's that the paint per that code will not be the same as on the car. WTF paint is paint as long as you have the code right? This code is U 9260, which is the paint mix code, DuPont, I will need to finish part with a quality clearcoat too. I am open for suggestions, remedy's, CF mem who have done there own painting? And maybe going to another paint mixer in the Las Vegas valley for there opinion! Hope all's well for you today. R

As I understand it, most high end body shops can tweak the "base" code mixes to match in their shops (due to fading, inherent batch variation, etc.).

Perhaps this was what he was referring to.

When I had my spoiler and door handles painted at the dealer, they needed the VIN. Apparently there is a database within the GM system that matches the color perfectly to your car...

Any dealer Parts Dept. can do a look up of the VIN & give you the true paint code.

Yeah, I think that is what the paint guy meant. Not to mention operator error. It sounds like he was (a) too lazy to mix the paint, and didn't need the business, or (b) was trying to build in a little CYA wiggle room for any mixing screwups.

Auto paint stores in my area use a gram scale to measure the mixing components. Newer technology is available in computer controlled mixing machines, but they set there unused because they have to be cleaned afterward. So...you're stuck with the human element. If the mixer guy is trying to pour in a fraction of a gram of component, and he pours a little much, he ain't going to start over...he's going to hope you don't notice.

The bottom line: If you want to do it yourself, the U9260 code is the best shot you have. On a new car, using correctly mixed paint, I think you will be hard-pressed to see the difference. JMHO.

Edit: Alternately, you can remove the fuel fill door and take it to him for an exact match...No excuses. He'll probably start with the U9260 formula, and then tweak it until he gets it perfect. Since he mouthed off, insist on a perfect match.
