Default Vin # Question

Is it correct to assume that if you have two vin #s, and you take the last 8 digits, that the higer numbered was built later than the lower # ?

The last 5 I believe represent the production number.

And yes, higher number = later production date

Would the difference in the two numbers reflect the number of cars built in between ?

Difference in number for the last 6 digits only, not the last 8 digits.

The difference between 65100018 and 55100018 does not mean that 10000000 cars have been built because the 6 in the indicated position is the model year number.

For the same model year, however, the difference in the last 6 digits of the VIN would indicate how many cars were built in between.

The VIN info. I had indicated a 1 in the 6th position was for FRC. Is that correct?

VIN DECODES: This is an example of a VIN # for a 2006 Corvette Coupe:
1 G 1 Y Y 2 x U y 1 6 1 0 0 0 0 1

There are 17 characters. Starting with first character on left the codes are:
1. "1"= Built in US
2. "G"= General Motors
3. "1"= Chevrolet
4. “Y” = Corvette body style
5. “Y” = provides more info about the car, usually a "Y"
6. “2” = coupe ("3" = convertible)
7. “x” = restraint code
8. “U” = LS2 engine
9. “y” = check digit
10. “6” = 2006 model year
11. “5” = Bowling Green plant
12-17. Production sequence number (starts with 100001 for each model year)

What's FRC?

The sequence number only identifies when a car starts down the line. If it is shuttled off to a repair area for significant problems it is possible that a car with a later sequence number will be completed and off the assembly line before the other car.
