A6 downshift in (D)rive???

A6 downshift in (D)rive???
I know the A6 in (S)port mode will downshift as the car slows down (p. 2-28 in manual), but I swear I can feel it doing it in (D)rive, too. Am I nuts or am I missing something, or is it time to see the service department? (3 "yes" answers and you will get negative points!)
Also, on a sad note
, Crush2 ('06 DSOM vert, delivered 1/6/06) took an oncoming pebble in the lower center windhsield today and is now sporting a dime-size star. Any advice or similar experiences?

Yes, it does downshift in all modes. It even helps slow you down. Otherwise it would do what is called 'free wheeling' and you would coast forever.
