I use the wipers, but have in the past used Rain X and it worked fairly well for me while fresh. It was a bit aggravating though after the Rain X had aged. I needed to run the wipers much less often than the lightest mist setting would allow, so it became a manual operation.
I do use the wipers on the C6 though and they work. On all my vehicles though I try to wait until there is plenty of water on the windshield before turning on the wipers, because yes, the accumulated grit will eventually scratch the windshield.
When it starts to rain I turn them on and then I can see out of the windshield. I tried sticking my head out of the window, but then my glasses got wet and I looked for wipers for them and well I couldn't find any
Of course I use my wipers when it's raining. I also use my headlights when it's dark out. I use my brakes when I want to stop. We are talking about a car here, aren't we?
I hardly ever use my wipers, and not only because it hardly ever rains here in TX. Drives my wife crazy because she is the kind that turns hers on at the first drop. I used Rain-X for years and now use RejeX. Same effect, easier application. Unless you are sitting still in the rain there is really no need to use the wipers if your glass is prepared correctly. Water beads up and blows away, you just have to train yourself to look between the beads...
The factory blades squeaked something awful in light mist/rain conditions. Used RainX and also replaced the blades with PIAA blades. No problems since then.

I get the same thing from my wife. I hardly ever use the wipers and mine is a daily driver. Only in really hard rain and having to drive below 40. Water just rolls right off the windshield when moving with the right treatment.

Hello Rejex...goodbye Rain-X...
Last time I detailed my C6, I used a claybar on all the glass to removed everything...then I Regex'd them and it is like night and day the difference between Rain-X and Rejex...
Rain-X will never touch another window on one of my cars...
Keep the windshield clean, and also wipe the edges of the blades with the damp paper towels you used to clean the windows. Never use wipers on a dry windshield. When the rain starts, squirt the washer several times to clean and lube the wiper blades and windshield.

If your windshield wipers left scratch marks, they didn't have enough rubber on them. I've not had that problem in the 44 years I've owned cars, and I certainly don't have that problem with my C6.
An added advantage of using the wipers on the C6 - it will automatically turn your headlights on, which is required according to TN state law when it's raining.

RainX is been my wiper of choice, so long as the co-pilot keeps quiet. I find it's especially better than wipers at night on the highway. Lights don't glare on the tiny droplets streaming up the glass near as much as they do on the slight haze that always follows just behind a moving wiper, even new ones.
I live in Nevada, we get very little rain.
When ever I use the wipers, in any of my cars, the rubber has dried out, wipers never seem to wipe, just chatter.
Over to Walmart, new blades, all is good for the next day or so.
Next time it rains, hard wipers....
It's never ending.
