I beleive active handling was new for '98, so that is my guess when Comp Mode became available. My '99 had it, that much I know for sure.
It was part of the Active Handling System that was optional in 1998. A "second generation" Active handling System became standard equipment in 2001. I have no clue what made it "second generation"...
What exactly is it supposed to do? I can't really tell a difference on my 06 vert A6.
Comp Mode turns off traction control but leaves on Active Handling. Thus it lets you spin the tires without bogging down, but still saves your butt if you get way out of shape. You can also turn off both TC and AHS with the same button, but I wouldn't recommend it... Its all explained in the manual.
