How long can you safely leave the plastic from the factory on the outside of your car? Mine will be sitting on the dealer lot for a week before I can get it, so will this time along with the time it spent in BG with the plastic on be detrimental at all? Thanks.
I live in Michigan but bought my car from North dakota and it was shipped to my house with the white plastic all over the car. It arrived while it was raining and during the night time. When i peeled the plastic off i washed the car and shined it up but could'n't help notice water spots that no matter how hard I tried would not come out. I actually had to take my 1 day old car and get it rubbed out at my detail shop i go to. It was pretty disappointing for me seeing how hard I worked for this car and how long i've waited to get it for it to arrive in that condition. I don't know if this is a isolated incident or if the dealer just didn't prep the car right before sending it to me. my detail guy told me it was some kind of adhesive he rubbed out that kept the plastic on and not water spots but thats what they looked like. make sure your car is shining when you get it.

Call the dealer and ask them how long THEY keep the plastic on their cars after they arrive. Ask a few of the supporting forum dealers for their opinion on how long plastic can be left on.
In any case if your buying the car from this dealer why not have them do the dealer prep for you.. they remove all the plastic, make sure battery is charged, etc... if yer picky you can have them skip the wash... remember they are responsible for the vehicle until you take possesion.

I am having them skip the wash, I will wash it and rejex it as soon as I get it home. I don't trust the lot boys to wash it carefully/correctly. I don't mind the dealer doing the other prep stuff though. Maybe I'll give them a call and have them remove the plastic. Thanks.
My 2005 had the shipping plastic left on for to long and it took the paint of five of the panels when it was removed. That car had to be scrapped and sold at auction.

How long was it on there for? That's pretty severe!

There's a reason the car should get dropped at the dealer, inspected, and PDI'd before it gets to the customer. Standard procedure is to strip the plastic covering off and wash the car while the driver's still there. Otherwise, it's impossible to properly inspect the car for damage, etc. Also difficult to claim damage after the fact.
When I first got my car I was shocked to see what I thought were chips in the paint along several edges - hood, door, trunk. Upon closer inspection and some finger nail scraping I realized that it was the residual "protective" covering. Finally go it all off but what a pain.

I read in another thread where some guys (employees) at the dealership wanted to take a newly delivered vette out for a spin but left the plastic on to protect the paint. The car got hot and the plastic melted to the body.

Same with us and we picked our car up 2 (LONG) days after it arrived at the dealer. We think maybe the transporter drove the southern route and it baked the plastic on. Even the dealer told us it normally takes 5 mins to remove the plastic but it took over 3 hours to remove it on ours. We're happy to report that other than some of those residual pieces, no mark/damage to the paint. They were, luckily, very careful.
Any other people who had difficulties with the adhesive from the plastic used to cover their vette. I got mine and having to go over with a fine tooth comb to get all the adhesive off - just little pieces here and there but it doesn't like to come off.
I was out at my local dealer today. He said they had a Black Z06 just off of the truck that was waiting to be prepped. I wanted to see the Z06 in Black. Took the camera out and grabbed a picture of a C6 and a Z06 still in the wrapper.
