I'm an F55 owner -- but have to admit, the Z51 package is the steal of the century. If you THINK you want it, you should just get it. Someday they main tone down some of the performance for gas mileage...
If you want to purchase a car local, Z51 may cost you more than the list price add suggested by GM. I made a great deal on my car without Z51. I thought Z51 would be nice, but was told the standard Vette is pretty high performance the way it is. But the dealerships do not have Z51 package cars sitting on their lots, so they will not deal on them.
My car was a base car with auto and I got it for $4000 off MSRP. If I had to purchase local and have Z51, the car would have cost about $5000 more than the car I purchased.
So be prepared to go to a site supporting dealer to order a car and get a good price if there are not any Z51 cars in your area.
When I was shopping for my C6, I found one with everything but the Z51 package, however it did have the "performance axle ratio" and the A4 tranny. I would have preferred having the package, I just wasn't willing to wait any longer. I got the color I wanted (VY) so all in all I'm happy.

For 06 all of the automatics are six spd, no performance axle is even available. It gets all the other goodies though. You think it would be a little cheaper for the automatic now, no special tranny or perf rear axles.
The Z51 performance package is probably the most cost effective mod available if you are interested in a very stable feel while cornering, but a somewhat stiff, almost harsh ride on rough streets.
On good surfaces and on the autocross or road course, it really shines. I would definitely get it again.
