Default Competitive Driving Mode??? etc??

I am a new owner of a C6, and am pretty confused about the various modes of the Active Handling System, and how it affects Traction Control, ABS, etc.

After reading the owners manual I'm not sure I understand:
a) what exactly is on, and what the systems are supposed to do, when active.
b) what exactly can be shut off, and
c) what components remain on (and which shut off) in Competitive Driving Mode

An explanation would really be appreciated. Thanks.

Traction Control- Use of the brakes or reducing engine power to stop rear wheel spin

Active Handling- Use of the brakes to prevent oversteer or fishtailing, or when increased tire rotation when compared to car velocity is occurring, ie hydroplaning. It's all about yaw rate and turning.

When you turn the car on, both are active.

If you press the button on the console once, it turns off traction control.
If you press it twice, it goes into competition mode- traction control remains off, but the active handling is less instrusive. It allows the backend to come around a little more before it intervenes.
If you press the button 3 times both traction control and active handling are off and you are on your own. ( NOT recommended for amateurs)

Hope this helps!

Every time you start the car Traction Control and Active Handling are on.

Traction Control uses the Antilock Braking to limit rear wheel spin (along with the Limited Slip in the Differential.

Active Handling uses various sensors to attempt to keep the car going in the direction it's pointed, it uses ABS on individual wheels AND can/will cut power to the engine if excessive sideways movement is detected.

The button on the console gives the driver control over which function is operating;

1. Press and hold for aprx. 10 seconds it turns off both T/C and A/H.
2. Press and release once turns off T/C
3. Press and release a second time turns on Competitive Mode (T/C off, A/H reduced interference but still on.
4. Another way to turn A/H and T/C off is to follow step 3 with a press and hold for 10 seconds.

The DIC will tell you what mode you have selected.

The T/C and/or A/H WILL NOT SAVE YOUR A$$ in extreme conditions. Floor it while turning or on wet roads you WILL GET SIDEWAYS, BACKWARDS OR EVEN UP-SIDE DOWN!

Keep them both on until you get use to driving the car and know what it will do under various turn and throttle combinations. You can get sideways or facing traffic quickly!

If you have a 6 speed manual you can spin the tires even with TC on, harder to do with an auto. If you turn off TC...you can really get a lot of tire spin...especially with a stick car!

Default Thanks

Thanks folks for the info. I have owned vehicles with ABS, Traction Control, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Active Handling, etc. . . . but I have never owned one with such a confusing manual. I appreciate the clarification.
