I was at the dealer recently and asked about upgrading Onstar in my 05 to digital. The Service Mgr has a friend in the regional Onstar office who explained that the current upgrade requirement for a 3 year contract will be adjusted to requiring only a one year contract. He said this will become effective near the end of this calendar year. He also said that they will not be advising customers of this until it goes into effect. So, take it for what it's worth, but if this is true it could be recognition that Onstar is losing 05 customers by requiring the 3 year contract.
Anybody know if the 06 cars already have digital On Star? How would you know? I guess just ask On Star?
The '06 vettes have digital OnStar. These will work fine for many years to come.
The '05 vettes have "digital ready" OnStar. I really hate the marketing schmuck who invented the word "ready" to mean that it doesn't have it. The "digital ready" OnStar unit that is in the '05 vettes is analog, but it can be replaced/upgraded with a digital OnStar unit. We've waited a long time for this upgrade to become available, and it hit the shelves this past January. However, from what I've heard, it is not a slam dunk of an upgrade. On some cars, in addition to replacing the OnStar brains, the blue OnStar button on the mirror wouldn't work, and they had to replace the rearview mirror too. I think one guy had his windshield broken as they were trying to mount a new rearview mirror.
OnStar uses Verizon cell phone airwaves. Cell phone companies are rapidly moving away from analog/digital towers to digital only towers. In another year or two, there won't be any analog towers left. At that time, anybody with an analog or "digital ready" OnStar unit will have something less useful than an 8-track player.
I got my upgrade, paid the fee, the installation was perfect. Then I linked my new OnStar number to my Verizon Wireless America's Choice Account (no more paying for minutes).
As long as you truly believe you will keep your Vette for 3 years, there is no real problem paying in advance (especially as the yearly fee for OnStar is likely to increase in the future).
Plus it's so nice not to have to dictate phone numbers one digit at a time!
