Hi everyone, GREAT site, kept me entertained looking at all the great threads, and awesome pics last night! I am getting way too impatient for my 06 vert Z-51, got the order number, no "TPW" bought it on 2/28. they ae telling me 3-4 weeks now. I wanted to get some aerosol spray cans (and clear coat) for some little under hood items, and maybe calipers. I told our auto paint co. here in west palm, monterey red, 80U 06 vette. He said he needs the actual paint code, a larger set of numbers (example 334u or BCCC334U etc.) to order them, and it would take a bit to get them, does anyone know the 06 monterey red actual paint code? He etold me to look on door jam, glove compartment, trunk, as location for that i.d. sticker, or could someone tell me where it is exactly located on 06 vettes. Thaks guys!! Jon
I got a Monterey Red C6 last week. I am looking at my window sticker but, no code number for the Monterey Red. The paint looks GOOD in bright sunlight, however.

Find another paint rep....lol paint codes are usually AU numbers, found either in glove box, on DS door jamb, or in the trunk under the mat. Sometimes on spare tire carrier/cover. I clal my paint rep all the time and i give them a 3 symbol paint code, andi t matches, all you need to do is tell them what line. I use PPG DBC line, DBC and Global are PPG's top two lines, but i prefere DBc over global. And you cna get either in spray cans. - Roger
U301N. You can find it on a sticker in the glove box.
THANK YOU!!! I got two cans of the U301n, and one 20 oz. clear coat #1. painted a left over small harley fuel access cover, paint is dead on! It,s amazing what a high quality paint with the proper (only aerosol) spray pattern can do. take the time with consistant coats, 2 coats of Monterey red basecoat, 3 coats of #1 clearcoat. The part looks identical in finish, metallic, color, and depth. Looking forward to "customizing" some under hood and caliper little projects. Thanks Again!
where did you buy the paint? paint shop or NAPA type stores?
No, not a NAPA or auto parts store, A auto body paint supllier, PPG, silkens, etc. They are in your yellow pages under auto body paint-supplies. I used B&S auto paint supplies here in WPB Fl. I called ahead so I did not have to wait for a custom mix. They are of course custom mixed on site, and then put into aerosol format. The spay patterns and consistatcy is NOTHING like a conventional krylon 3-4 buck can. cost is 9.00 to 28.00 per basecoat can (12oz.) depending on paint quality. 14.95 per 20oz #1 clearcoat. I paid 45.00 total for (2) BC, and (1) 20oz CC - I bought more than I needed cause I didn't want the hassle. For trim pieces, I probably bought better than I needed, but the match, and quality is literly identical to the naked eye.

Be advised...Monterey Red (U301N) is a tri-coat system. There should be a base coat and then an intermediate coat. They are NOT THE SAME paint and can't be packaged in a single can. But, if you're happy with the results you got, that's all that matters.

Thanks for that, I did not know that, I only did a small part, about a 6" piece. Maybe it's not fully cured (I am no paint expert by ANY means) but I looks identical. Now maybe if there was 2 large adjoining panels, painted seperately (like a car is) there would be a substancial difference. For small part painting, It looks the same, I was pleasently surprised. The finish was real nice. I did not expect it to look as good as it does. Even had that similar GM orange peel, but I am sure you are right. For small stuff, It looks real good, Thanks for the info, I was not aware of it.

I believe the tri-coat system is what gives Monterey Red it's different character in different lighting, i.e. it's candy apple appearance. The light must be reflecting off the base coat and the transparent intermediate coat differently as the angle of the light and the intensity of the light changes.
Under direct light, you may get a close match with only a base coat and clearcoat...as the light changes, you might not have the same effect as with the tri-coat system. That's not to say there aren't some knock-out BC/CC metallic reds out there.

You are absolutely right, Monterey Red is a tri-coat. However, they seem to be able to match the color with a base/clear coat system. Apparently not all tri-coat colors can be done this way, but Monterey Red seems to be done successfully. I don't think I would want to try a big panel this way, but for painting things like license plate frames, fuel rail covers, screw covers, etc. it works great.
The following is a comment on tri-coat colors from AutomotiveTouchUp.com:
What is a tri-stage paint?
A car manufacturer will paint a vehicle one color (a groundcoat), then they will paint over it with a very transparent color with a higher density pearl. This method gives a different effect. Sometimes we have a 2 stage formula available which is easier to apply. If a two stage formula is not available for your color we will contact you for the purchase of an additional can.
