It depends on what you consider "real world performance gains." If you are just talking about numbers, yes they are close. If you're talking about real world performance driving, the advantages are obvious. Refer to MT article and for the track, refer to Datawiz's post:

I wish the A6 had been available when I bought my C6/A4. Oh, well...
Still happy with the A4, though!

I watched him do it!
I was behind him doing my burnout in my 03 Cobra when he ran his 12,5@111 on a 1.91 60' his 1st pass.
Later on that day he cranked out a 12.48@112.
My C6 A4/3.15 Vert ran a 12.57@110.67 on a 1.92 60'.
What's not to believe?

I have had my 2006 for only two months, but loved my paddles
Great transmission
Now if you are really into racing, then I can see going manual, but for the casual guy who just like to "go through the gears" every now and then, the A6 is the best of both worlds

Sounds like that reviewer needs a pair of glasses. Apparently he couldn't see the 3-2-1 markings on the A4 shift lever quadrant.

It's still a mush box no matter how you slice it. Now if it were a true SMG, I'd take tha in a heartbeat but until then, it's an M6.
