Default "Actual" payout

So you buy your vette. Prior to buying it, you negotiate a price you feel comfortable with on both sides. You shake and the deal is done.

Now how much did that actual price go up due to taxes and other "charges" that may apply. I'm sure this varies from state to state, but i just want to get a broad idea here.

I only negotiate out the door deals. That includes taxes, fees, etc. So when I shake hands, I know exactly what I'm paying.

YUP - me too ...

Mine was as agreed to with a $35 fee for paperwork. NOTHING else as I bought out of state. I paid the taxes when I got back to my home state.

thats what i was thinking. i'm wondering if the dealers that are willing to come down from msrp are selling the car at that price "out the door" or not.

lexaudio, thanks for the tool. it was very helpful.

I agreed to a "before" price and the extras were state sales tax, license and title fees, a standard $50 document prep fee set by law here and a $27 "inventory fee," totalling about $2500. The last one was the only one I didn't anticipate, and was not enough to bitch about.

That's the way to do it. You tell them the exact price you want to pay out the door. If they can meet it great, if not its negotiiation time. I alway start about $5000 less than I really expect to pay and let them work up to my real number. But you have to do your homework to know what is really possible. A wild low ball offer will get no cooperation...

I negotiate the price of the car and then look over the fees on the paperwork before I sign.

I live in Arizona and got a great deal from Tommy Junior at MacMulkin in New Hampshire. I used a GM Supplier Discount with Tommy (took $5000 off of MRSP on a Coupe, A6, Z51, Comp Gray Wheels, 2LT).

No doc fees, no hidden costs from Tommy Jr. Just a very easy and enjoyable transaction. Gave him a down payment when I ordered and paid off the rest with a cashiers check after the car was built and ready to ship. They even covered all the overnight mailing costs. That included 3 overnights and they even included the overnight envelope for the paperwork I had to return to them.

I got a courtesy delivery from Garrett Motors in Coolidge, Arizona. $350 and absolutely no hidden costs. They got the temp plate for me at no additional costs. Car came clean and full of gas. What nice people. I then went down to the DMV and registered and titled the car and paid the State Sales Tax. Added another $3900 because I paid for 2 years of registration ($750 per year!).

I'm buying all my future Vettes this way!

I did my deal by phone and agreed to a $26.50 trip permit (out of state purchase), and a $35 document fee. When it came time for the final amount, the dealer tried to charge a $213.56 business and operation tax--I said no, and they backed off.

When the salesman "writes it up," you should see the bottom line on your sales agreement, unless you are purchasing in one state and registering it in another. Then you have to (usually) have to figure in the sales tax and exise taxes, if any, for your state.

Default final cost!

Bought mine from Tommy Jr at MacMulkin too. 3lt vert, mn6, z51, etc. at $4,800 under msrp, $50 doc fee, free overnights, etc. as mentioned above. Tommy was great to deal with.

Did NCM delivery. Got home to NV and registration and related costs were over $850, plus sales tax at 6.76% -- ouch!!

I'm doing a GMID deal with Rick Daniel at Les Stanford. The only "add-ons" are $170 doc. fee that Les Stanford charges and the $250 courtesy delivery fee to the dealer out here. Then of course tax and license, which is where they REALLY bend you over...

thanks for this post. i live in arizona too and it looks like i'll be buying out of state, so the thing i wanted to get an idea of was tax/registration cost for my state. I figured it would be around 4grand.

thanks for all the posts. its funny how you have to think these things through. Even if you talk down a great deal, that still is not always what you are paying for the vehicle..

good ol' uncle sam always gets his cut of the transaction

Same here... in fact at the very least, I've always been able to cut a deal where I get the car out the door, including tax license and all other fees for the MSRP price on the sitcker.
