When the windows are up and top on, the air pressure inside the car puts resistance on the rear hatch when closing...the power pull-down then pulls it the rest of the way closed.
When the top is off and/or windows down, the same amount of force will cause the hatch to latch immediately because the air pressure has not hindered its motion.
Hey LEX i know exactl what you are sayin... Sometimes the trunk won't pull down by itself... and ill push acouple of times and then ill lift it back up and try again and it will work... i guess they just act up sometimes...
I would unlock the trunk and have to unlock it again to open it.
I don't like things to act up. Going back to dealer for explaination.
That way, they have record of the complaint. I helps when you are trying to get something done in the future.
They will look at the # of times you have complained about it, and not call it wear and tear.
IT helped with my Z windows.

I've never had this happen. If mine doesn't close fully on the first try, gentle pressure over the latch and the pull-down takes care of it every time. Sounds like you may have a problem.

No problem...if windows are up, you will have to press down in the middle of the hatch to engage the power pull-down, if windows are down, it should engage itself.
I never have to slam mine with the windows closed. I just lower it all the way down and then apply slight downward preasure to the outside center with my hand. It sucks it right down. If yours isn't operating the same, you do have a problem. You should never have to "slam" the hatch down.

I just don't get GM's "fix" for the C5/C6 hatch closing problem. Yes, it's a problem if it doesn't close with a reasonable shut. It's also a problem if the "fix" of using a motorized pull-down requires you to push down with your palm on the hatch to engage it. Where's the logic here? Why didn't they design it so that you just have to simply close the hatch with hardly any pressure and then the motorized pull-down could grab the latch without you having to press on the *&@$# thing. Yes, my hatch closes with no problem if there are doors/windows open/down. That is not usually the case though that I leave a door open and go to the rear of the car, only to have to go back and close the door or window.
Why didn't GM index the side windows when you press the interior hatch release or fob so that the hatch can then be closed easily? As soon as the hatch is closed, the windows would inch back up. It should be easy enough to do. The electronics know whether the hatch is open or closed because you get that message on the DIC if it's open. I talked to Top Down Tech about them adding that feature (indexing on hatch open) in their Window Valet, but the guy didn't seem to think there is a problem since GM had implemented the motorized pull-down. I told him that the "fix" doesn't work like most envisioned it would. I also told him that I bet he could sell hundreds of the Window Valets if he added that feature. Oh, and what's with that plastic close handle on the hatch? That has to be the cheapest component on the whole car!

I have noticed that a quick trip into the trunk with throw off the automatic pull down...in other words, the latch doesn't seem to have time to reset. You can hear this if you stand at the rear of the car and open the hatch, waiting a few seconds you can hear the mechanism "reset"....at least on my car. If I close the hatch too quickly the pull down doesn't seem to be engaged...
My wife really hates the way the hatch operation works, so I usually close it for her. It seems like it takes more force to engage the pulldown than in other luxury vehicles, i.e. my wife has to lean down on it with half her arm to get it to close.
I find it much more satisfying the way it closes with the hardtop removed, it just slams all the way down...
