Default Trade Value

I stopped by my dealer to explore the possability of trading my 05 C6 for an 06 C6. I bought the car in August, 2005 and as of today they tell me it's trade value is $40,000 even.

Just FYI - Mine is pretty well equipped; Polished wheels, Magnetic ride, Navigation, 3.15 rear axle, both tops and premium paint (VY).

You didn't mention how many miles you have?

Did you pursue this by 'just getting an idea' or were you really ready to pull the trigger? They probably had more room if it was the latter.

That's essentially a meaningless number since you asked the wrong question. The right question: How much will you pay me for my car? You should always keep the selling of your car and the buying of a new car as separate transactions. The Dealer on the other hand loves to combine the two transactions.

Your almost always better off to sell it yourself. If they give you a fair trade in then they mark up the new one to make up the difference. The only way to know the price your getting for your C6 is to sell it your self and then negotiate the price of the new one.

of course one is better off,95% of the time, selling on their own. What's happening here is retail and wholesale are being mixed up!!You do not get retail for you car on trade in,you get wholesale!!!plus the tax savings, which in lots of cases makes it worthwile to trade.OH,and that still doesn't change what your car is worth on trade in!!

Private sales usually do bring more $$$, but remember you lose the tax credit difference not trading at the dealer.

I think the few bucks you lose at the dealer (yes, they do stick it to you) is worth not having to babysit and waste all your time screening a bunch of people you never met.

...and then you can deduct the extra value you get on trade for not having the top!!

I always found Kelly Blue book real close to the price you'll get. I did a quick check and it looks like $43k private party and $39k trade in value for a 2005 with all options using "good" condition.

While that's true in some states it's not the rule in all states.

Just out of curiousity, what is it about the '06 that would make you take a big hit getting rid of the '05?

Boy dealers sure make allot on used. Just checked where traded
my 2 vehicles in they are asking 8K each more on the two cars
traded in on the vette. So what they made on the new vette
and 16K on the sale of the used cars, they arent doing bad at all

I don't mind combining the two transactions...you just need to know what you're shooting for as the net difference. The dealer can futz with the new car price and the trade-in value all he wants as long as you end up with the net number you're shooting for.

Used car buying is way different then new. If they're asking 8K more then U traded them for, be confident that a smart buyer will be able to negotiate that # waaaay down....depending on the car of course. There's tons more negotiating room in used then new.

16K is allot of negoliating room. I have always gotten a call in the past
from buyers asking about the car. Hope they call before make a final
deal and tell what they gave for the car and maybe help them get it down further. Have told a couple of clubs and vette people know
