I was driving home after work this evening along one of the military boundary roads on Fort Bragg, NC when I noticed a rather large shadow pass overhead in my rear view mirror. I figured it had to be a low flying aircraft but I didn't see or hear anything right then. Traffic was surprisingly light for that time of day so I'm motoring along at about, well, somewhere north of the posted speed limit of 50 MPH.
Then I hear it...slowly pulling up on my right side at just above treetop level is an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter paralleling the road. Wicked looking piece of military hardware. We stayed together for about 3 miles of curvy road, and he (she?) is really flying the route, banking steep for the turns, then straightening up and back on point. The Apache I'm sure is just loafing along while I'm scooting along briskly waiting for an MP to pop out around the next corner.
Don't know if the pilot was even aware I was there, but I'm pretty sure we were close enough for me to be in the pilot's peripheral vision. The Apache eventually peeled off in a lazy circle and headed back toward base. What a rush!!
