I was planning on a black/black C6 LT3 A6 Z51 to be bought in Dec and today my wife and I went to the local Mercedes dealership to pick up her ML350 from its maintenence visit and saw a SLK 350. Very nice car with a BEAUTIFUL interior but only 286 horses (the AMG variant is pushing 70k and I don't want to spend that). My wife is in love with the car and I like the lines, the interior, and the hard top convertible aspect, though I worry about the loss of power in relation to what the vette must be like. My wife is convinced that the C6 will be falling apart in about 2-3 years (I have a 99 trans am that we had alll kinds of problems with) and she is pushing me hard toward the SLK. I have test driven neither and need to, but I was hoping for some input, particularly from the guys who have had their C6s from early on whether or not the GM product is holding up. Thanks!
Well, I haven't had mine that long. October 2005 when I picked it up. I really don't want to jinx myself or the car. So let me say this... NO PROB as of yet. Guess one of the lucky ones. 2006 C-6 Mont. Red, A-6
Heh. You want to start talking about MB reliability? Pot calling the kettle black if you ask me.
Go to jdpower.com and click on Consumer, Autos, and JD Power Ratings. Select the 2005 SLK and 2005 Vette Vert and click "view all ratings". The Vette spanks it in reliability.
When my wife and I were in the market we looked at the Vette, Boxster, SLK, and S2000 (even though this one was much cheaper than the others). For bang for the buck it was all Vette. I too like the looks of the SLK and am attracted by the convertible hardtop but wanted the Vette's performance.
And that's the real discussion you need to have w/ your wife. No one who owns an MB should be throwing reliability stones. You need to decide which car will make you happy. If you want reliability buy an Accord or a Camry.
wow - thank you. i just got done looking at the JD power rankings. that was an eye opener. i suppose no one knows how any car is going to hold up over the long term anyway. either way I think I would have to go with an extended warranty as I plan to keep my next car at least 5-7 years. I cannot wait to do some test driving!
Picked up mine in Nov 2004. 2005, Z-51, MN6, w/all the bells & whistles.
18 mos. 20,700 mi. It's my daily driver. Driven in the snow 3X – pulled out of an unplowed parking lot w/ 8” snow – driven in heavy rain on interstate frequently. I’ve had one minor elec annoyance that the dealer fixed in 20 min.
Have your Bride check Consumer Rpts Freq of repair ratings for new cars. Mercedes is at the bottom.
Yeh. I'd let my wife tell me what car to buy. Sounds like she gets hers and then gets yours. A vette is the only sports car in the world to buy under $100,000. It will not fall apart.
