Default Outside temperature sensor / display?

Has anyone had any issues with the outdoor temperature sensor on their C6 Coupe?

Mine reads 54 degrees regardless of outdoor temperature. It just started doing this in the last couple days.

Anyone know where the sensor is, oe whether there are any known problems/issues?

Thanks. . . .Stu

Mine reads correctly except for a few minutes after I wash the car...then it reads too low.

Ours is slow to start after taking the car out of the garage. Usually 10 to 15 minutes before the display starts to change. Pretty accurate after that though.

Mine works the same way. I have an appointment at my dealer to check that out and a few other things on Weds. If I find out anything, I will let you people know.

The sensor is under the hood, on the passenger side, down low, next to the radiator. It has a plug with wires coming out of it and sticks in toward the radiator. Some members have found it disconnected.

This works!!! I put a CAI on my Halltech and obviously the tech forgot to reconnect the ambient temp clip. Before connecting it, the temp was stuck at 75. Once I connected it, the temp went to 88 then slowly came down to 74. I'll have to watch to make sure it is not stuck at 74.

Questions: when I put the connector together, there was an alligator clip on the wire, does the clip go up on face down?

Also, VET4LES, since you are soo good, can you also cure the CEL and Check Gas Cap lites?

Thanks again,

Jeff

Last week mine read 68 for approximately 10 minutes, then suddenly jumped to the correct temperature of 87. The A/C was horrible until the car read the correct temp.

Somebody posted the parameters the ambient temperature sensor uses and they were pretty complicated. I don't remember exactly but something like 5 minutes of driving at speeds over 30 mph was necessary before the sensor updated.

Just got my 2006 shop manuals from Helm. There is a table on page 1-189 that shows what gets displayed as outside air temp depending on how long the car sat and how fast it is going. It also says that a failed sensor will show 75 degrees.

To bypass all those conditions and have the display updated instantaneously, it says you can press Front Defrost, Rear Defog, and Fan Up buttons simulataneously.

What does that mean "have the display updated instantaneously" ? What will be updated?

Last week mine read 56 degrees for 15 minutes, then quickly rose to 78 degrees. I told my chevy service advisor and he said it shouldn't do that and to bring it in.

Found the sensor. Is connected. Doesn't look physically damaged in any way.

Maybe I'll price a new sensor, and if not outrageous just replace it. But I haven't quite figured out how to get in there - I've got thin arms and I can touch the connector, but really can't manuever.

OK - did what you said, and it seems to have reset the sensor and readout. I don't know what caused it to be stuck or whether it will occur again, but this seems to have cured it for now. Thanks!

This is what the manual says about it, similar to many of the above posts to the effect that there is a delay when you first start the car:

If the outside temperature goes up, the displayed
temperature will not change until:
• The vehicle’s speed is above 10 mph (16 km/h) for
five minutes.
• The vehicle’s speed is above 32 mph (52 km/h) for
two and a half minutes.
These delays prevent false readings. If the temperature
goes down, the outside temperature will be shown
when you start the vehicle. If it has been turned off for
less than three hours, the temperature will be recalled
from the previous vehicle operation.

The outside temp gauge on mine is absolute crap. It has NEVER worked correctly and I've had my car 15 months. I told the dealer about it very early on and I got the usual run-around. Hell, mine can stay on the same temp for 2 15-minute trips and never change, and be about 20 degrees off of the real temp. I gave up. It's not that important to me. Compared to the Crank Pulley, the water leak and the dead alternator, I figure I can live with a crappy temp sensor.
