Default Mp3 Or Not?

Well now. From what I've heard the '06 Coupe plays MP3's in the navigation system.

Does the 2005? Or was that an upgrade in 2006?

As set up at the factory, 2005s do not and 2006s do. There's a software update that can be performed on 2005s that allows them to play MP-3s. Many here (including myself) have had it performed and it works great.

I threw in a freshly burned mp3 CD and it would not read it. What sort of format does it need to be in?

It can be done at a dealer, no charge. Usually, they go by S/N on radio. DON'T KNOW ALL THE PARTICULIARS. There is a posting with the software that can be downloaded to a cd and do it yourself. Maybe somebody can point you to the right direction. A lot has been posted on the subject. I did mine. Piece of cake. Works great.

I did the update myself on my '05 NAV radio and it took only 10 minutes to complete. I love it.

Everything you need to do it yourself is right in that post. I was done in about 10 minutes and saved a trip to the dealer. It's not for the faint of heart however, there is a phase when the radio goes dark and I was like but everything ended perfectly.

I do not have the changer and was so happy when the update came out. Downloaded it and did the update and now I am so happy. Well over 100 songs on a single disc and I never run out of music. Highly recommend you update.

Default Upgrade software without Nav?

#1 - Does anyone know if the downloadable Nav - MP3 upgrade software will also work on a 2005 without Nav? I have the basic system with 6 disc changer.

#2 - Does anyone know what to tell the dealer to have them do the upgrade? My service tech said there are 31 GM service bulletins for my C6 stereo and unless I can find out which one it is, they cannot do it. (They never heard of it.) Or would one of you that had it done at the dealer, post the tech/dealer info so I can contact them for the info?

Thanks!

If you don't have nav you don't need the update - your CD payer already should play MP-3s. The update only applied to 2005s with nav.

The format is MP3 but it depends on how you burned it. If you just copied files, that won't work. You need to use a burning program such as MusicMatch or RealPlayer. Nero or Sonic may also work but I have no experience with them. Is the burner in your PC different from the CD drive? Does the CD play in the CD drive of your PC? Do you have another player that recognizes the MP3 format.

Yes, a fully loaded 700Mb CD has the capability of storing about 8 1/2 hours of audio if the 128Mb rate is used. More if using a lower rate and less if using a higher rate. The one I recently burned and have in the Vette now has 198 songs on it and there is about 50Mb that I left blank.

do you notice the sound quality being a bit off. I thought mp3 is compressed and lacks the sound of a wav file.

Wav is compressed also...it all depends on the sample rate you use. I think my MP3's are at 144 right now and that's plenty good enough for listening to in the car to my ears...but the higher the sample rate the less you're going to "hear" the compression.

Default mp3

I did the firmware upgrade myself on my 05 and the mp3s discs play perfectly.
