I have ordered a 2007 Convertible and plan on doing a lot of driving through the beautiful Commonwealth of Virginia on my way to NC to see family. I have been stopped several times by the Virginia State Police. Every time I get pulled over, although they are always professional and gentleman they seem to be more upset about the use of radar detectors then about the actual infraction. I have to say I think that the Virginia State Police are very professional and are always gentleman but would rather meet them over coffee and donuts.
I remember a few years back there was a remote type radar detector that could be installed in a car and it was not easily visible from the outside of the car and the controls could be hidden. It had a rear facing and forward facing detector head and the control was inside the glove box. Does anyone have on in their car or know who makes it? I think it the Corvette it would be a good investment.
( I did a search and found nothing so if I missed a thread, pardon me)

Sounds like you're describing the Escort SR-7. I looked at that system a couple of years ago. At that time, it lagged the technology of the Escort 8500x50 in that it didn't support POP mode and was vulnerable to detector detectors (what the cops use to catch you using a radar detector, which are illegal in Virginia). Its pretty expensive too. Escort may have updated it in the meanwhile to address those vulnerabilities, but I don't know if they have.
There are several remote detectors available which mount the receiver somewhere outside the cabin and a control box inside the cabin. All these systems have worse performance than the normal in cabin detectors mostly due to the low placement of the receiver.
I don't know what you are worried about with respect to VA. Get a Bel STI, which is immune to all current radar detector detectors and put in either on the visor or with the suction cups high up on the windshield right behind the tint strip. This and a power connection to the rear view mirror connector make the detector impossible to see from the outside in a C6 corvette unless you are sitting on the hood. I live in VA and have had Leo's looking right in the car without them being able to spot the detector mounted in this manner.

I do this too, and also mount it so that I can flip the sun visor down and completely obscure it. As soon as I enter VA, I just flip the sun visor down over it and keep going. My only problem is that if I happen to be pulled over, I have to reach up and turn the detector off, otherwise it'll be screaming so loud the cop will hear it before they even get to my window (they always leave the radar on and pointed right at the back of your head when they pull you over). And... if you have to reach up to fiddle with something, they'll probably see you trying to conceal it. Leo's are observant that way ya know. Their life depends on it sometimes.

Thanks for all the info. Like I said, I got stopped early in the morning by a VA State Trooper. I was at about 80 in a 55. He was more upset about the radar detector than the speed.

If you have it wired to a switched 12v source just shut off the ignition. Some people to avoid even this have a kill switch mounted under the dash. This of course adds somewhat to the problem with hiding the power wires.
I have used K40 in the past and have loved their systems. I had the k40 UN3000SWL with Laser Defuser Plus and never once came close to receiving a ticket. The Laser Defuser was always fun, the police would try about 3 times to get a reading and then they would give up. The best part about the system is that it was completely hidden. The piezo speakers were hidden in my air conditioning vents (left vent was front of car, center vent was laser defuser and right vent was rear of car) and the LED's were flush mounted on the top side of the gauge cluster in my dash (once again, 3 LED's left to right to match the speakers). I believe what I liked about the system the most was the fact the LED's could be easily seen during the daytime and especially at night. So even in the event you have your top down or your music up you will still be easily notified of a potential problem ahead.
I have the K-40 system in my 300C and it works great but pricey at 2K installed. It has one shifter and 1 detector up front, and 1 detector in the rear. It is supposed to be undectable by RDD. Calibre believes in the system enough that for one year they'll reimburse you for any ticket that has radar/lidar on it. I've avoided 2 radar and 1 laser ticket in the 9 months I've had it.
I just (this week) went with the SR7/SR3 system in my C6 at $1300 installed. HiFi Buys mounted the SR7 control under my mirror and it looks a lot better than than an 8500 hanging there. There are two shifters and 1 detector up front, and 1 shifter in back with this system. But the installer said he couldn't get the mirror power to work (I could with the 8500) so he wired it into the fuse box. Tonight the system reset itself a couple times, so I'm going to go back and tell them to try again.
The Escort system is less intrusive in the cockpit. The K40 system just has a switch and two LED's but they (usually) go into the dash cover. I didn't want them touching my C6 dash which is why I went with Escort. If I were you driving Virginia, AND I KNEW I had an experienced installer, I'd go with the K40. But if I wasn't completely confident about the installer, I'd go with the Escort.

A sensitive detector like the Valentine will do a fair job if you put it on top of the wheel humps in the trunk area, and some folks say it works in the center console about as well. Could be useful to get a good detector at low cost if you don't actually live in VA. As posted above, don't be messing with stuff in the cockpit once the LEO has decided to stop you, unless you want to be introduced to Mr. Glock.
The detector detectors are constanly being upgraded so don't count on invisibility, have a convenient kill switch and turn it off if you are around LE or observing the speed limit. Just be sure to turn it back on before lighting the afterburner...
I run with my V1 on the passenger side visor in horizontal position shooting forward through the top of the windshield. It is hardwired to the heated seat fuse, and I use the concealed display which enables me to run with the detector blacked out. The remote also has a mute button that shuts off the sound. You can easily hide the remote because it is small, the ashtray is a good spot.
If I want to keep the V1 out of view (when parked or if stopped), I just flip up the visor and the VI goes nearly vertical and is out of sight. You can use some kind of simple wedge to keep the visor perfectly horizontal when you are running.
I have the Escort SR-7...had it installed through Car Toys in Houston. It has two sensors hidden up front in the grill...one is a radar and the other is a laser...it has one sensor above the rear license plate...radar only. The head unit is very small, about 4"x0.5"x1.5", I have mine installed to the right of the driver side sun visor. It would also fit nicely in the ash tray area, behind the closeable door. It is hard wired to come on when the ignition is on...it also has a thumb wheel volume/on/off switch so you can turn if off if your not worried about getting caught.
I consider it very expensive...about $1400 installed. I don't know if it's the best unit out there, but I haven't been ticketed yet.

Hi! I'm in Duluth, GA and have a 2007 vert coming. Can you tell me more about this unit? Where did you get it? Does it cover front and rear? Does the Laser Diffuser effect regular radar or just Laser? I am looking at a dual hidden radar detector that also comes with jammers, so I'm trying to decide which way to go.
Thanks
I have the Passport SRX (its the combined radar and SR7 laser units), in my C6. See the link below for some pics...but it is very stealth and the head unit is mounted by my right calf (very out of sight). They even have an option of a remote speaker and a hidden LED light, so you dont have to have the head unit exposed anywhere in your car. As listed by some of the guys above, it is pricey ($1,400 - $1,500 installed)...but I bought it new for $600 and installed it myself. Have it in two cars and has saved my As* several times.
Alright, I'll try and make this as simple and clear as possible.....
Laser jammers are legal in a lot of states, radar jammers are NOT legal in any state. K40 (now called Calibre) has been selling "undetectable" radar systems for a while now. They are called "undetectable" because all the components are hidden out of sight from anyone, passangers, LEO's, thieves, etc.. The undetectable systems come in either single or dual receiver models. I have always gone with the dual receiver models as I like to know where exactly the radar is coming from. The dual models will come with 2 receivers, 2 led's (that flash at different rates of speed depending on the signal strength), 2 piezo speakers (each radar band has a different audible tone that beeps at different rates depending on the signal strength) and a main control switch which has on/off, highway/city and volume switch. The single receiver unit is made for front detection only and will only come with one led and one speaker instead of two, obviously.
Like I stated earlier, I have enjoyed owning the K40 undetectable series radar detectors. Mostly because of their performance for me but also because I am **** when it comes to things like a radar detector hanging from my windshield.
Now onto the Laser Defuser..... I have owned a couple of these along with my radar protection. These things have saved my azz on quite a few occasions, especially on the highway. The Laser Defuser works the same way, it comes with a single piezo speaker (that makes a totally different tone than the radar ones) and a single led. The Laser Defuser comes in a license plate frame or can be removed to be installed in the grill. The Laser Defuser can NOT be obstructed by anything, it has to have a clear sight of oncoming laser detection. The radar receivers however, can be mounted behind plastic, fiberglass, etc., just not metal.
Let me know if you have any other questions. It took me about 4 hours on each of my systems to install depending on the vehicle. So make it a Sunday project and I guarantee you'll be satisfied when you're done.
Check out K40.com for more information.
edit: And oh yeah! There is a HUGE difference in a laser detector and a laser defuser/blocker. All a laser detector is worth is notifying you you've already been clocked. So in the event you are speeding be prepared to get pulled over.
