I hate to use a really bad pun, but the lights are night and day different. I loved my C5 but I never realized how bad the night lighting really was until I drove my C6 for the first time at night. I wish I had some hard facts or numbers for you but I suspect that they would be staggering.
First I was a C5 owner, a 99 and a 03 Z06. Like many C5 owner's I was dissatisfied with the headlights on the C5 and purchased first the APC bulbs that were all the rage back in 00/01 then when one blew out I opted for the Sylvania Silver Stars, while these were an improvement, they were still "light years" behind the headlights found on lessor cars being sold.
While they may have been perfectly adequate 10 or 15 years ago, today with HID's they are woefully inadequate, especially for a high performance sports car. There is nothing worse than over driving your headlights at night. It's very unnerving and unsafe.
Fast forward to March 22 this year. I sold my 03 Z06 and bought a new 06. We picked it up at the NCM, some friends drove down with us in their 01 C5. On the way home I was following my friends following the recommended break in procedures when the auto feature popped on my headlights. My buddy turned his on. So while traveling together on I-65 north towards Louisville I pulled over the left lane and he stayed in the right, I was about 5 car lengths behind him. What I saw floored me, the C6 headlights threw light as far down the road as the C5's and I was 5 car lengths behind, and the light color was brilliant white, not that dirty yellow. So we played around, I would pull up along side him, I'd fall back, I'd get directly behind him and so on. We were chatting on our cells and I asked him how the lights looked and he said they make the C5 lights look "pale". He said get directly behind him and “light” him up with the high beams. His laughter was so loud my wife heard it in the passenger seat from my cell phone. All he could say, is they are the best headlights he's ever seen.
Bottom, line just ask some C5 owner's what they think and if they are honest, they will tell you they are spending many hundreds sometimes thousands to upgrade their old fashioned halogens.
Bottom line for modern day sports car they are sadly lacking in performance. To me that's a safety issue first, the sexey looks are just a bouns and no more "speed brakes" at night.
You just have to experience the difference to believe it. It is astounding. The difference between my 99 C5 and my C6 is unbelievable. You have a far wider range of sight on both sides of the car and in front, it is much brighter and clearer and the beam travels much farther. I feel much more confident driving on unlighted back roads than I did in my C5. Plus, it looks hot...........
c-6 is light years ahead Seriously, my first night drive I actully called my wife just to tell her how much better the lights were. ( I had an 04') new lights are way
Agree big time. No comparison between the C5 and the C6 (to paraphrase Dave Hill from the C6 Owners' DVD, once you drive the C6 and experience how well you can see at night with these headlights, you will forget all about wanting the popups back).HTH.
