Oh Boy.... If you have the base GM radio, don't waste your time. I spent a bunch of time with dealers and Delco on this subject. If you have a Bose or otherwise you'll probably be ok... If not, then PM me....
I don't take no for an answer and this has me beat...

no pictures here but..
1) open the lid, remove the 4 torx screws
2)open ashtray and remove the lighter and the little door there(it's on springs so pinch it.Remove the screws in there.
3)over by the ebrake boot there's a hidden screw in there.don't forget it because the console won't come off if you do.
4)ease the shift boot down to reveal the screw that holds the shift **** and remove it.
5)lift off the shift ****,then the boot...
6)The ebrake lever should pull off, then you can slide the ebrake boot down and out from under the side of the console there.
From here on out it should be clear on how it comes off...I believe I mentioned all the screws (and torx screws).
good luck.If I managed to do it,anybody can.
Check under the FAQ section under Ipod install. Someone posted some pics of taking off the console, etc. there. Hope this helps.
There's also some very good points made by some others who have tried to install an Ipod hook-up with and without success. Follow their leads and you might get it to work for you as well.
Each of the connectors have some sort of release before they will unplug from the center console. You have to find the way they release before you pull on them too hard.
I did not have to remove the top of the shifter on my A6. Just shift into park, neutral, or drive as needed to remove and reinstall.
