how do you control dash light intensity? if you rotate the little **** to the left of the steering wheel, it does nothing and springs back. pushing it in turns on map lights and a light at your feet. meanwhile, dash light intensity changes on its own. any way to control it?
The dealer I bought my car from went over alll that stuff with me. If I was you, I would go back to the dealer and have them review the functions of the car with you.

thanks. not the best design. what about if i want brighter? turn to right, i guess.
I thought it an odd design also, but mine works fine. At night with the car running and headlights on, turn to left and dash lights dim, turn to right and they get brighter, let go and it springs back to center. I don't think it does anything for daytime illumination when the headlights are off.

That's what this forum and the owner's manual are for. Are you having a love affair with your dealer?

I agree. Going back to the salesman? That's the one thing I would NEVER, EVER do. Asking a salesman for help is like admitting that you know absolutely nothing about cars. These guys are typically the most uninformed, non-car guys on the planet.

The dash control is not a rheostat, it is a spring loaded switch. Twist it all the way to the left and hold it until the dash lights dim to the brightness you want, then release. To brighten the lights, twist all the way to the right and hold until the lights reach the brightness you want, then release. Simple. Easy. Explained in the owner's manual.
Think of it as a spring loaded rheostat. If you turn it & hold it, you will notice the lights gradually dim or brighten.
Really stupid design IMHO sold to GM by an electrical supplier to a GM Exec following a 3 Martini Lunch
It isn't a rheostat, but because many people are used to a rheostat to control the dash lights, it is a bit counterintuitive (ie you have to read the manual to learn how to use it correctly).
It is basically the same as the + and - switches for controlling HUD brightness. Push and hold + to brighten, or push and hold - to dim. The only difference is that the dash brightness switches are integrated as a SPDT center off rotary instead of individual SPST momentary push buttons.

besides that lousy ****, the other thing that puzzles me is that the dash lights seem to go bright and dim all on their own, probably in response to ambient light. another of GM's famous electronic nannys that are more annoying than helpful. personally, i prefer my dash lights max bright all the time. at least let me control em myself.
