It is so sad to read some of the posts from supposable responsible members - oh well, the joys of open Internet. The danger is that with a wide, diverse and open population, you eventually always get some 'outliers'.
I am not a real golf fan, but enjoyed very much watching Tiger Woods clobber the guys in the British Open. There was so much back story, that even a non-golfer like me could get caught up in it all. There were personal trials (recent death of some golfer's parents), the yips, the recovery from a slump Tiger was in when he retooled his game and everyone doubted him... Ernie Els smoothness... the course driving these guys to distraction... just the sheer genius of strategy and execution that Tiger mustered. His focused ruthlessness, but without rancor. Who has all of that?
What is my point?
That smack in the middle of several of the late holes, even though spectators had been TOLD what the rules were regarding cameras and cell phones, there were still multiple events of people unstrapping them and causing overt annoyance to the professionals trying to do their best. It clearly even affected Tiger on a late hole, and in a closer match, could have played a part in the outcome. The officials were the picture of patience as they stated to these people for what certainly must have been the 1,000th time to please turn off the cell phones, and no cameras, please.
And it is kind of the same in CF: we have pretty much open gates, but there are rules (this is NOT a democracy, and freedom of speech is not absolute here - read forum rules). There are 'officials' (mods), but the good mods try not to intervene and become part of the action. And yet, if they fail to intervene when needed, then the whole thing is in jeopardy of being corrupted by just a couple of aberrant types.
Can situations drive otherwise reasonable people to do things they shouldn't? Sure, going back to the golf analogy I recall when a supposedly classy guy like David Toms gave a 'rude hand gesture' to a fan who heckled him when his game was faltering. He was so embarrassed at his own response, he tried to deny he did it, which compounded the situation further.
In my mind, here on CF, there is perhaps a way to handle intrusive people who are bent on causing a ruckus, and driving otherwise sane people to act badly: it would be great if there were a sort of 'people's choice' points that a person could attach to any post, not based on technical content, or disagreement, but based on whether the post was off-topic, rudely put, stated in a way to cause personal affront, violating rules, etc. Someone gets post after post where these ratings are "in the red", then mods could easily, rationally, and consistently apply the rule that already exists that says if someone is so disruptive as to outweigh their contribution, they can be sent to banned camp.
Anyway, as for myself, I am going to try to bite my own tongue on provocative posts from people who are clearly not in sync with CF values, and just let the rest take care of itself. I hope that means we can still disagree from time to time, and still have a bit of fun, but not go over the top.
