Default Fuel gauge problem

Anyone had this problem? My 2006 fuel guage reads wrong all the time. When the car tank is full it reads half. As fuel slowly gets used up while driving it moves towards the full mark. The idea of having my 4 week old cars transmission, fuel tanks and everything else back there pulled apart to replace the fuel sensors makes me sick. Could it be some kind of simple problem or is that just wishfull thinking?

I have this problem. It's a thing to be managed.

Have proven that Chevron fuel ONLY fixes this. It's that Techroline additive. Before using Chevron fuel use the fuel cleaner from Chevron from any auto parts store. I found this solution after many web searches for the same problem for my C5.
It works fine; ya just have to buy Chevron fuel only. Beats having the rear end removed to get to the fuel tank to replace the sticking fuel sensor.
I have learned where all of the Chvron stations are in my hood. Maybe Chevron selling GM their fuel sensors!

Default I had this

I had this problem with my 2005 and was ready for a nightmare, but, took it to dealer and it was a software patch that took twenty minutes to install and verify and all has been well. Guess microsoft isn't the only company with bugs :-))

Default One more thing

Like Gimme5, I too thought it was a fuel problem because sometimes it was fine and that was usually with Mobil gas. But, it was a software bug only that contained the parameters for the fuel sensor. Just take it to the dealer, should be no problem or rip out.

Definitely go get the software fix. It takes all of twenty minutes to do it. If that doesn't work, then have them replace the fuel sending card in your gas tanks. It is usually the left one that has gone bad.

It's worth getting the job done and done right, rather than having to go find Chevron ONLY fuel. That's just silly. Instead of living with it just go get it fixed under warranty. You never know if when the warranty has expired the problem doesn't start happening while you are using Chevron ONLY.

Not gonna believe this, but after yesterday's posting my fricken gauge went out again today. Haven't had this prob for fricken months. Glad that I replied and now have the software thing to try. Was seeing consistent results with the Chevron thing, though.

I had the same thing a while back. I got the weird gauge issue on a really hot day driving to Vegas. It went away and didn't come back for about 8 months so I dismissed it as a freak occurance. Then it happened again, went away, then two weeks later it happened a third time. I finally got fed up with it, took it in and had them reflash the ECM. 20 minutes out of my day to permantly fix this problem.

It's in need of a software fix.

When my gauge went bad back last Summer, there was no available software fix and my car was torn apart at the dealer for 3 weeks. They replaced the left side sending unit and it has worked ever since. I used Chevron exclusively up until it broke and I also had added a bottle of Techron. Mine went bad anyway. Good luck, they have only had since the C5's to get it right-- eddie

My symptoms are different. When full, gas gage will only read 7/8th. Dealer tested and had no fix.

Thanks to all who replied. I am going to the dealer for the software fix but now the the guage went to zero when I filled it up today and I get the "service fuel system" line. Is that a symptom that happened to anyone else and did the software fix it?

Went to dealer yesterday and found the following service bulletin on the Service computer while the service guy had left to check on something and e-mailed it to myself:

Document ID# 1351974
1999 Chevrolet Corvette
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: Erratic Fuel Gauge Reading (Reprogram the PCM) #02-06-04-010A - (06/27/2003)
Models: 1999-2002 Chevrolet Corvette
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This bulletin is being revised to add models and update the Correction and Warranty Information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 02-06-04-010 (Section 06- Engine).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Condition
Some owners may comment about the fuel gauge intermittently indicating an empty reading and then return to the correct fuel level indication.
Cause
This condition may result when fuel blends containing aggressive sulphur compounds react with the fuel sender assembly, which may result in voltage spikes being induced on the fuel level signal to the PCM. Use of another fuel blend may reverse this reaction and return the system to normal operation.
Correction
Reprogram the PCM with the new service calibration which is available in the June 2003, Techline® TIS release sent to the dealers on 6/28/03. Use the TIS Version 7 or later data update.
Warranty Information
For vehicles repaired under warranty, use:
Labor Operation
Description
Labor Time

Powertrain Controller - Reprogram

Thanx for the info on this. Am scheduled for a PCM re-flash this Saturday. Am so relieved.
Thank you, thank you, thank you...

Had this problem in my C5. You can check on the reason has to do with the sulfur content and the pickups. Any way I used a bottle of Techron and in a day everything was back to normal. Its worth a try, it only cost 11 bucks. Better than the $1,000 the dealer qouted me for a replacement and labor.

Took the car in for the software fix. Since my car was built in June 2006 it apparently had all the updates already from the factory. Unless someone knows of some other software fix that my dealer doesn't know about, it appears that the tanks will have to come out to replace the right side sensor. This really bothers me that my brand new car will need to pulled apart.
