Can a clear top be painted? For sure there would be no problem with it coming apart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I often wonder why GM never did this in the first place. One top that could be used in two ways. There should have been big cost savings over developing two different roofs.
If the painted and clear tops are both made of polycarbonate, I still can't understand why the painted tops fail and not the clear.
I would worry about the paint absorbing even more heat.

Talked to an owner on the Corvette Skyline Cruise in April that did that. I didn't know that it was a transparent top until he told me. He did his black on a silver car though and I just don't know why.
The clear top is solid...not glued to a frame as far as I can tell..the glue is what is giving way to the loose tops
The "clear" top is polycarbonate "plastic". Unlatch your roof, the latches and what the latches are attached to are metal. So where polycarbonate and metal comes together is glue.
My painted top started the delamination process last week during the heat wave. BTW, a very noisy process! Think I will squirrel it away until a permanent fix is developed for the factory delivered roof. Someday I'll be glad to have all original parts.
I'm running with the transparent top now, which is a real treat during Spring and Fall when the sun is at a much lower angle, but can be hot in the Summer time. So stopped by AutoZone and picked a two-pack of black mesh, suction cup, sun shades for $3.99. Works well, especially with one A/C vent directed straight up.
