It happened three times to me now. The memory seat seems to have lost it position. Last time was this morning, so I checked to see what could go wrong.
I think I know the answer. The seat won't move if it's not in P (A6) and what happened is that I jumped in the car, hit the start engine button and put the car in reverse before the seat had time to go back to it's position.
I know remember that both time it had happened to me, it was probably for the same reason, since I was in a hurry both times (which is exactly when you don't want the car to do what it's supposed to and why I remember it).
So if this has happened to you or happens to you, you'll know you'll have to be in P until the seat it's in its correct stored position (you can still move the seat but hitting the memory button won't do a thing).
Don't know if this will help, but I though I'd share it with you.
BTW, with a manual transmission, do you need the hand brake to have the seat go to its stored position?
My '06 C6 will not execute the memory stored position unless the handbrake is engaged. Also, if it has begun to move and you start the engine the memory function will pause while the starter turns then resume when it cranks, but again only if the handbrake is "on." I can't speak to '05 or '07 models, but it is likely they're all the same.
Good information to have about the auto tranny memory and not moving the tranny out of PARK too soon. Here's what the 2006 owner's manual says about both the auto tranny and the manual tranny (page 2-73).
To recall a memory position, do one of the following:
• If you have an automatic transmission vehicle,
press and release the desired button 1 or 2 while
the vehicle is in PARK (P).
A single beep will sound and the memory position
will be recalled after a brief delay.
If the vehicle is not in PARK (P), three beeps will
sound and the memory position will not be recalled.
• If you have a manual transmission vehicle, press and
release the desired button 1 or 2. If the vehicle is on,
the parking brake needs to be set to recall the
memory position.
A single beep will sound and the memory position
will be recalled after a brief delay.
If the vehicle is on and the parking brake is not set,
three beeps will sound and the memory position will
not be recalled.

I just had to try this after I read the thread. My '05 A4 coupe memory seat moves into position once the car is cranked whether it's in gear or not, with the door open or closed. Once it starts moving, it's going to it's preassigned location, period!
On the opposite end, when you switch the car off (or should I say "press it off" ) it won't move until you open the door. Conversely, my '03 convertible wouldn't move forward until the engine was cranked and the door was closed and then it moved back as soon as the key was switched off. Strange how they turned it around - at least on my '05 model.
