Okay, I'm about to purchase my first Vette. Its down to 2 cars.
I've had my eye on an '05 A4 for a while...(its gonna be my daily driver and in fair amount of traffic otherwise I might consider the M6)...the dealer also has the exact same vette with an M6. He's telling me you can shift the M6 from 1st to 4th and continue in 4th from 15mph to 50mph....similar to negociating daily traffic without shifting constantly. Is this true? Do you M6 owners do this regularly? Or in stop and go traffic find yourself continually pressing the clutch??? Done that before...Not my idea of fun. Your thoughts please.
It's true that they are set up to go from 1st to 4th anytime you are under X miles per hour and are not pushing on the accelerator more than 20% (I think). However, the real issue is whether you enjoy shifting your sportscar. If the only reason you are considering the automatic is because of the traffic and you will at other times enjoy going through the gears, get the 6 speed. But, if you're OK with an automatic, just go ahead and get it. It's whatever you are happy with. For me, it's all about the shifting, down shift and accelerating through turns, etc. When I get tired of that, I'll probably be driving a 4 door Buick sedan and hopefully that will be a few decades from now!!
Good luck - no matter what you choose.
drive mine in traffic.... you can go up to 30 in first (not really revving from idle)... up to 50ish if your on it
yes you can shift to 4th at about 20-25 mph (i don't though)
no need to press the clutch if traffic is at least idle speed... (few mph)
the biggest hassle of traffic is 0-4 mph... if traffic is stop and go... well that would be something to think about....
on the other hand.....
the C6 clutch is as easy as any other car import or domestic that i have ever driven.... there are a whole lot of other manual transmission cars on the road and if you get behind one of them.... no problem
i say... your choice.... good luck... any one you choose will be
BTY.. go with your first choice.... its usually the better one...

My previous car was a M6 (a 350Z but the principles are the same). I did regularly skip shift. With a torque curve as broad and as flat as the LS2 has, there's no good reason to row through every gear in normal street driving. You're still on the clutch a lot in stop and go driving, though. Not my idea of fun either, which is why my current car has the automatic (A4 in my case since it is a 2005). I have no regrets. With a few tweaks, the A4 is a terror on the drag strip, and quite competent in ordinary day to day driving too.
BTW, for those who insist "a sports car must have a manual transmission", I say "then go buy a sports car". There are still some Austin Healey Sprites out there in the weeds somewhere. The Corvette is a Grand Touring car, and a world class one too. It is also something of a muscle car. But it isn't a sports car in the traditional sense. It is a big hulking American V8 car with a 39 foot turning radius, not a light nimble little boy racer for the minimalist enthusiast.

good thought. plus if the car is, dare i say it, z51 equiped, the tarnsmission gearing is lower. more in tune with the c5 z06. this will give you a little quicker car and the manual is a little better on gas milage if you drive it right. i know fat chance. one other thought, i don't know from my own experience but, some people on here have said they think the exhaust is louded with the 6. some things to thing about. why don't you drive thm both and decide? good luck which ever you chose you'll love.

Been a member of this forum for a while now and this is the second time I've used this....... and both in this thread!! I've owned an AH Sprite and it was a damned nice little car but to say the C6 is not a "sports car"........give me a break!! I've also owned TR6s, a 240Z, a Mazda RX7 and a Porsche but will tell you I consider the C6 with the M6 to be the best handling Sports Car I've ever driven.
I drive mine in Austin traffic all the time and don't mind it at all. Course that is me so you have to go with what you like. But if you like to have a 6 speed you have to go with it. It is alot of fun!! Good luck with your choice...see you around town...
