Default Callaway Headers

I realize that almost everyone on the forum thinks that the shorty headers are a waste of money, but I'm a little hesitant to turn my new 2007 C6 coupe into a violator that could be picked up in an EPA sweep and crushed. I realize they wouldn't produce anywhere near the HP and torque that long tubes with high flow cats would, but my question is do they produce any extra power at all? The average LT setup seems to produce 25 to 30 extra RWHP. Do the shorties produce even 10 to 15? I know there is a Callaway rep who monitors the forum. Could you tell me what the Callaway shorties could reasonably be expected to produce if installed along with a Honker CAI?

Tell me about these EPA sweeps where they crush cars. Sounds like fun, I'd like to come out and watch.

In all seriousness, shorties are just a waste of money. Maybe worth 5 to 10 hp and for the money, it's just not worth it. If you are worried about getting your car crushed, don't run against anyone that has long tubes!

I called a couple of companies that made short tube C5 headers (for C6 availability) and the response was universal, don't waste your money.

I'm basing my concern about the EPA sweeps on posts by ShopDog and others. Maybe you haven't heard about them, but I've found that ShopDog is usually dead on reliable about what he says. He had a recent post about this on July 30. Read it for yourself. Crushing them is what the EPA does with a noncompliant car that it catches in a sweep. Maybe not a common problem, but it's a real one. I hope you don't have the "fun" of watching your Vette being tossed into a crusher by some bureaucrat because of your beloved long tubes and high flow cats. PS- I don't street race or drag my car at the track. I prefer autocross.

Damn I thought California was bad, but all we get is a fix it ticket and have to put the old manifolds back on and get it inspected. I have never heard of an EPA sweep here in CA. Another reason to stay out of Texas.

Sorry, just doesn't seem right to me. Crushing a car because it has long tubes? Sounds pretty servere to me. I think maybe Shopdog was having some fun with a lot of people.

I also prefer autocross. So you are saying that more power won't allow you to go faster in an autocross. I've run slaloms for over 37 years and I've always wanted more power. If you put on shorties, it will push into a street prepared class and for only an additional 5 to 10 hp, you are going to be very uncompetitive in that class.

One other thing, I am not trying to talk you into long tubes, just don't waste your money on short tubes. Leave the stock manifolds and run in the SS class, the car will be much more competitive. That's the only thing I don't like about the long tubes, it throws me into a Street Prepared class and that opens a whole lot of other allowed mods I'm not going to do to my car.

I do have to tell you one thing though, the car drives so much nicer with another 26 rwhp and another 39 rwtq. It also sounds a lot better. But believe me, if that's not for you, that's fine.

If you do believe in the sweeps, just do like I do and do all your mods yourself. If there are sweeps it will be at large hot rod shops. But again, I don't know where you are getting your info on crushed cars, I just won't bite.

In the same thread that ShopDog quoted a $50,000 fine for EPA violation, another forum member mentioned that the San Diego police got authority from the EPA to do a sweep for pollution equipment violations. Apparently they were tired of the ricers and their "can of angry hornets" exhaust systems!(My speculation). They crushed the cars they confiscated and then made the kids pay the fines anyway. The member stated the whole incident made the newspapers. Maybe he was making it up for shock effect; if so, it worked with me. The thought of my beautiful new Vette going into a crusher gives me nightmares! The title of the thread was "Complete exhaust system-Street legal?".

I live in San Diego. Every day I pass about 9,000,000 rice-burners with those almost comical exhausts making that obnoxious "angry hornet" sound. If there was a crackdown out here on any of those cars, it would be news to most folks I know and made ZERO difference. Miramar road is still loaded with shops that make tons of $$$ putting those things on Hondas and Toyotas. They did get serious about street racers a few years back when kids were getting killed every night. There were fines and confiscations in those cases...

Crushing cars in America? I could see them crushing new cars that have not been sold that do not meet EPA requirements, but a personal car? No way. Seems like there are a lot of gullible people on this board!

I've not heard of anything like that out here. The only stuff I hear about are confiscations (racing, drugs, illegal smugglers) and fines. No crushing. They sell the cars at auction - big ol' can mufflers and all!

No, it's Gore's fault. They are crushing all those cars in California to avoid Global Warming!

My long tubes are coming off my car tomorrow, I won't take a chance to have my Vette crushed along with a bunch of fart can cars.

Well, I'm done, it only took about 3 hours to get the stock manifolds back on. I'm sure glad I didn't throw anything away. Car drives fine, but man, I SURE MISS THOSE 26 RWHP and the 39 RWTQ!!!!!
