I think the Bose system is just fine, except that the automatic volume compensation system is inadequate. In theory, if the system was working properly, you would not realize it is working. That's where I detect a little confusion in this thread.
There is a difference between "I can't even tell it's working because it's working so well I don't notice the changes in volume", and, "I can't tell it's working so I have to manually adjust the volume to compensate for speed and noise conditions".
This is then a common problem for both NAV and non NAV Bose systems. I'm surprised that Bowling Green or Bose has not addressed this problem after three model years no less.
So if you open your windows while you're driving, are you saying you do not have to adjust the volume manually? If so, I don't believe it or you are very lucky!
On my 99 Tahoe the auto volume control is speed sensitive and works fairly well. On my 05 C6 the auto volume control is "more sophisticated" and supposedly reacts to ambient noise and is worthless!
The Speed-sensitive Volume Control in my C5 worked great at the second to highest setting. It raised the volume to compensate for the increase in tire noise from an increase in speed almost perfectly, and I got used to never having to touch the volume. The Bose Audio Pilot in my C6 3LT does not perceptably raise the volume for the increase in tire noise from speed. Honestly, I can't tell that it's doing anything, and I have to up the volume manually to hear the stereo as speed increases...
My C5, which had I believe had 3 levels of Speed Sensitive Volume Control, was much better. The C6, I agree, is a piece of crap for the price we pay for this car.
The automatic volume control on my 2006 Coupe with nav/XM definitely works, but no better than the simpler system did on my C5. Maybe not quite as good.
