I leave mine in the console and then hold it up when passing through the I-Pass. You are supposed to have it in teh center of your windshield and be clearly visable for the supposed cameras they have.
...or just speed up to 180mph and user your Fly-Pass!!!! kidding.
They are ugly and shoudl be black, but they are supposed to be highly visable I believe.
That's what i was going to do back in the day. I don't think you are supposed to. It is supposed to be visible for the cameras. I read or heard that some time ago. Don't remember where. It seems logical but may not be correct. Just food for thought.
I have mine immediately right of the rear view mirror touching the top in the shaded area of the glass. You really almost cannot see it from the outside. I used the velcro strips and no problem.

Some cars have a windshield that blocks the signals, and so they make an IPass that attaches to your front license plate frame, so visibility doesn't seem to be a big issue.
I think they're more concerned with signal strength- putting the IPass somewhere else can degarde or completely cover the signal. Since I don't drive the tollways much anymore, I keep mine in the center console (properly oriented) and it usually works, but not as well- if I pull up to a gated booth, the gate won't start to lift until I've come right up to it. Occasionally it won't lift at all; I must pull out the IPass and wave it by the windshield. Some folks reported good luck with mounting it under the hood (fiberglass).

I did the same thing. You can't see mine unless it is pointed out to you.
Also, I don't think visibility for the camera is as big of a deal as it is for the signal to transmit to the sensors above in the I-pass lane at the toll plazas that enable it to debit the toll amount.
