Default Headers DYI, will it throw codes? Need a tune?

I'm considering installing headers myself. Do I have to have the car retuned afterwards? (I'm satisfied with the tune I have right now) Will the car throw codes due to the headers if I don't retune? If I don't retune will the car "learn" to properly run because of the headers, or will I not get any benefit without a tune?

Lastly how much louder will the car get by adding headers, I've got Corsa Sports on the car right now, and not looking for any drone, or a LOT of extra noise, some would be ok, but I don't want it to be obnoxious.

Thanks.

I have an '07 convertible and installed a set of LG's about a month ago. It is a pretty easy job to install the headers, and like a lot of things, I probably could do it in half the time if I had to do it again. Right now my set up is: 1)Stock Intake 2) LG Long Tubes "off road" (no cats) 3) Stock exhaust.

The car is definitely louder with the new headers. They really allow a lot more air to flow from the engine. As I said, the stock exhaust sounds a lot better with the new headers, and I'm sure that with Corsa Sports the car would be VERY loud. I am almost tempted to keep the stock exhaust now that I have the headers, but I think I might go with the B&B Route 66 system for a little more ooomph. The headers will really change the exhaust note/volume of the car.

As far as engine codes are concerned, I am currently throwing the rear O2 bank codes. Now I am not running cats, so this might not happen to your car if you choose to run with a set of high-flow cats.

As far as a tune is concerned, I would definitely do it. As I told you before, my car is pretty much stock except for the headers and lack of cats, and my car did manage to "learn" how to handle the new set up to a certain extent. Even with the car making some adjustment, it is still running pretty rich and it definitely needs a tune. I think if you are going to spend the money to put headers on, you really should have a tune done to make sure you are taking full advantage of what the Headers can offer.

I have LG Pros on my car, and yes they will make your stock exhaust louder, in a good way

You do not need a tune if you don't want one with headers. The car will run fine. However, a tune will maximize the gains. My opinion though, is if you are going to tune it, then add a 160 thermostat and CAI as well before the tune.

To my knowledge, the rear O2 sensors will not work with long tubes, so you will have some codes unless you tune them out

I've already got the car tuned with CAI, and the 160 stat. Thats why I was trying to avoid tuning again if possible.

Thanks for the info.

I did LG Pro LT's along with a 160 stat. It does sound better, even with the stock catback. No tune and I picked up 26 rwhp and 39 rwtq. I went with the LG High Flow Cats and I have not had any CEL's.

I installed Kooks LT headers myself. It didn't throw any codes, Though I did have a tune afterwards. The tune really made a difference.

I installed my DynaTech headers, cats and X-pipe, and currently have my stock mufflers back in place. I had my headers JetHot coated prior to installing them. The coating holds in the heat, resulting in cooler engine compartments and lights off the cats much quicker. With this set-up, no CEL, and almost stock sounding exhaust. Good luck.

I have LG longtubes with Corsa Sport exhaust. It is VERY loud. But the good thing with Corsa is that I get no drone at highway speed. But I don't want to leave you with the wrong impression. When I am driving around town in stop and go traffic other drivers know I am there. To me that is a little too loud. To many C6 owners it might be just what they're looking for.

Do you have cats, maybe that's why its so loud? I've been contemplating about headers for a while now and didn't think/know that they'll make car THAT loud. I don't mind the noise myself but the wife hates the Corsas already, I'm afraid to add to that with headers.

I started out with Corsas(touring),very nice ,not overbearing until WOT.
Then came the LG headers, high flow cats ,and X-pipe. Slightly more sound.. NO DRONE... and at WOT the sound is unbelieveable, but not overloud. Just make sure you use the Camero gaskets when you do your install
