Default Question about car covers...

Once I get my Vette home on 11/9, as it will be a daily driver and I have to park in non-covered parking (THE HORROR!), at work. I was wondering if it would be worth it to get a car cover - I worry that taking it on and off over and over again would be more detrimental to the finish than leaving it exposed - anyone regularly use a cover and if so, which? I work at a place where it is highly unlikely anyone will mess with it.

IMO that is true. Especially after the first time it gets wet on a windy day and it slips and drags on the ground. I had a cover for my first C5, used it for a month or so, then wadded it up and threw it in the garage permanently.

Keep the car waxed well and it should be fine. The cover is far more beneficial then any harm it could cause. The sun is the killer, filth from bugs, birds, nasty dust from passing cars, effed up landscapers, nasty reclaimed water from sprinklers.

Cover it dude.

I use a covercraft weathershield. Roll it on, roll it off, fold it up and it fits in a fairly small bag. washable, no worries.

Not sure about the outdoor covers. Jut put my indoor GM dust cover. Had to put the car away for 5 months. Silky smooth. Doubt it would harm anything taking it on or off often. I think my 600 thread count sheets are less silky smooth than my car cover.

My advice buy a damn good cover and use it.

I use mine all the time. You'll find that anything that will lower your anxiety over leaving your car unattended in a public place is a good thing. For me putting a cover on lowers the car's profile from somewhere around a 9 to about a 3. That's a good thing too.

Then it's a barrier to UV fading of the Sun as well as those bird droppings, broken branches and flying trash you get on windy days (like today).

Mine was given to me by the dealer, it cost about $200.00, is silver and can pack into a small pouch that fits into the rear coolers.

It's up to you, but I bet you'll want one eventually

I've had a couple of the Wolf brand NOAH covers and used one on my SL when parked at the airport with few issues. I suspect things may be a bit windy out on the great plains, but the NOAH cover fits snuggly - -

There's no question the cover provides good protection, but prolonged use in a windy environment might rub the finish along the fender lines and other sharp angles over time.

I suppose one of those "inflatable garages" out on the parking lot probably wouldn't go over too well, eh ?

Congrats on your new Vette and good luck!

Regards-

In the 2 years I've owned Corvettes, I have purchased 2 car covers and thrown both away...more trouble than they're worth and leave marks on the finish...

I use a cover. In addition to all of the advantages mentioned, I believe a cover also protects against door dings.

Waiting for my C6 to be built now, and in my parking spot at home (condo complex), we hav ea big issue with birds. I cover my current 350Z every night when I get home, and while it's a pain in the ****, it keeps that acidic bird poop off the car, along with lots of other nasty stuff in the air. IMHO, it's worth doing, and the only place my current cover rubs in the edges of the fenders, which is no big whoop for me.

BTW, does anyone have a suggestion for the best breathable, weather-proof cover out there? Thnx.

I would skip the cover! If you do put a cover on your car, make sure the car is 100% clean and dust free to avoid scratching. Plus, how are you going to get that wet cover home from work on a rainy day!

Mid-America has a easy to use chart showing the different types of indoor/outdoor covers and what each provides. I've been driving corvettes since 78 and none of them have been parked uncovered. Besides protection from the UV rays, bird crap, tree sap it keeps preying eyes out of the inside of your vehicle. Keep a good coat of wax on it and use a dust buster to brush off any dust - the cover will do the rest.

My cover will shed the water easily and fits in a bag. Also it can be put in the dryer.
And if I know it will rain or is raining. Will use no cover that day and take the pain.

I have been using a cover at work since 2000. I use a Noah cover.
It is easy on and off. Always park the nose into the wind and it
won't blow off. I cable and lock it every day.

Most important is to keep plenty of wax on the car and keep the car clean. The Noah cover lasts 3 years here in texas with the heat. When it rains it dries quick.

I drive mine to work lots in the summer and I cover it with the "Weathershield". The sun is the killer, not just the paint but the weatherstripping. Bird crap and who knows what else could land on your car. Plus mine is a convertable and I'm sure the top wicks all kinds of crap. Right now in the Fall I don't use it some days, the summer is the bummer.
